The Plymouth Rock Breeders thread

I can't remember if I have ever posted these pictures here and people that frequent the Plymouth Rock FB page are familiar with them but for those that haven't seen them...this is a breeding pair that I am hatching off of this year.

Please send any culls this way! Although, I don't imagine there will be any...... beautiful birds. What improvements are you looking for?? Would a tad more breast on the male be desirable??......

HOLY MOLY, Matt - fantastic birds. To mimic tigercreek...what are you looking for next? Holy cow...to be this far along in type...I do know I have a very, very long way to go with the SP variety when I see birds like this. Thanks for sharing pictures!

Even if they were dressed (w/out feathers), with weights provided and management methods discussed. I may not have been real clear in my first post, after rereading it. I would certainly post pictures ranking the cockerels prior to selection. Just making sure that posting pictures of dressed poultry is OK.
I would pop this into a new thread here in the Exhibition, Genetics, and Breeding section - I recall Fred mentioning to me not long ago about the PR being a true dual-purpose breed; it would serve beneficial for us all to have an opportunity to learn & discuss what to look for that will make a good dressed bird, pre-dispatch.

They are so lovely--picture perfect! In my dreams....

VERY nice! Watch the tails on the cockerels, it's trying to form a second angle but still a nice rock. Don't let the back shorten any either, it's not short, but that might be the beginning of moderately long. Absolutely LOVE the pullet! Can you say "Champion American"?

I love it when progress is seen. It encourages you through the years. Long time readers know when this thread started, I was pretty open about the lack of hatching vigor I was seeing in my old line of Barred Rocks. This years hatch is a culmination of 3 years of work to try to improve the hatching vigor. Our so-called F2's (B1A) chicks hatching are 3/4 Good Shepherd based birds and 1/4 the so-called Maine line birds.

This batch is flat jumping out of the shells. Best vigor I've seen in this program yet. Very, very pleased. Got a few more pips and chicks to go.

Fred, I have a very small sample, but so far all 9 of my Good Shepard X Duckworth Barred Rock eggs that made it to the hatcher, hatched with no problems. Unfortunately, I will not have that many more to hatch this spring since that male that got hurt by our caretaker is still limping. Most of the eggs from that pen have been infertile now. Maybe I will try again in the fall depending on what these few chicks look like then. Getting too hot for me to hatch too many more, but I'm still setting eggs from the Good Shepard X Stukel line and the GS X Duckworth in case a few are still fertile.

You've come a very long way in a very short period of time Fred. Good for You! Vigorous birds are so much easier to hatch and turn into so much better birds. I've got some black non-rocks that all it takes is the cock looking at a pullet and the eggs hatch when they hit the ground. OK, not quite that easy, but I bet I could hatch em in the window sill.

That's the way our Reds are, Tom. They spoil you. We'll keep at this Rocks until they have what we're looking for.
I try to focus on just a couple of baby steps with each season. Can't eat an elephant in just one bite.
