Once again, you have found me a great book. Thanks so much. I do have a question though. I have one Blosi pullet and three Jwip pullets and a cockerel. I just bought them and they are almost six months old. I do tend to like the Blosi best and my question is do I contact the original seller for eggs that are Blosi or try to mix the strains. With the winter coming I'll be lucky to even get them laying by March. I'm in La so it won't be so cold but it's gonna be a brutal winter.

What's a brutal winter for you in LA? lol

No it can't be brutal. We had the worst winter I have ever lived to remember last one.. We have to have a nice one this year.. It has to be.

First, not trying to be ugly, but they are BLOSL line birds, not Blosi....(for Bob Blosl)

Secondly, without pictures of what you have, answering your question is difficult. What are you trying to accomplish? Do you have traits in the Blosl bird that can be used to improve the JWhip birds....and vice versa? One thing I've noticed in the Blosl line is that they lack the tail lift necessary for Rocks....perhaps the JWhip birds would help in that area....

Feather quality on the other hand is EXCELLENT in the Blosl birds I've seen

So, we'd need a little better "picture" of where you are and where you want to go in order to give you any guidance in regards to breeding

Is this rooster going to be show quality or not?

This thread is not a place to post photos, asking if this or that bird is "show quality", a silly expression of itself.

We know nothing about this breeding of this bird, of it's line, who bred it, where it came from, etc. None of the essential information has been provided as you've told us nothing.

If one is truly serious about becoming a breeder, then...

1. Get a mentor. Spend a large amount of time listening. Pay attention.
2. Purchase an SOP for the nation in which you intend to show and breed for show.
3. Attend top quality poultry shows in order to see, with your own eyes, what high quality, standard bred poultry looks like.
4. Take the time to study and learn your chosen breed. Know it inside out, forwards and backwards. Know the history, the Standard and spend time learning from those who know the breed well and have a well earned reputation with the breed.

There are those who are sincere about learning to breed, but most are not. They just have a kind of chicken ADD, "Oh look, a squirrel".

Going to a very large show this weekend. Well Large for Canada.. Over 1,000 entries. That's the biggest in our province to date. It's being judged by Dave Anderson of California & Troy Laroche of Ontario. Both are among the best & most highly sought-after judges in all of North America. Dave is also the President of the American Poultry Association.

My nerves..

I have 6 of my Rocks entered. I won't be bringing all 6, because of molt. My mentor keeps trying to convince me to bring them anyway. Not happening.

I will be bringing my camera and hope to see some beautiful Rocks! They are by far my favourite breed

My main man Jagger is entered. I think he has started to molt, but not too strongly.. I am just hoping he doesn't look miserable as they often do when molting.

How's that for a wide gate?

Not bringing the girl beside him. She IS in full blown molt. and the rooster damage around her tail makes her butt look fluffy when it is not. Oh and yes, she is wearing protection. A couple of his girls did get a little bare in the back and I wanted the feathers to grow in properly. I made them myself. Works like a charm.

Some of these fall shows are scheduled during a season when some birds are in moult. Not much you can do about it.

You'll do well, very well, Justine. Go light 'em up. Enjoy the show.

Edited to add: Yes, indeed. You've got some very good judges there. Worth chatting with them, just wait until their work is done.

Thanks Fred, I really appreciate the vote of confidence.

I'm super nervous. More so than last year. I am quite upset we didn't vaccinate this years birds because of predator issues and too much stress on them.. I have some very nice Buckeyes and Ameraucanas I am dying to show as well. Next year will be better.

I vow to hatch my Rocks for ME early in 2015. I won't sell chicks until I have at least 40 on the ground for myself to choose from. Scouts honour. I have a heated brooder room, so I can raise them in January. I am hard on them. They still are out without heat at 8 weeks if hatched in January.

One measly pullet that's 8 weeks old in September is really awful. I don't know what I was thinking. They won't be ready to breed in the early spring.. but I did keep only 6 of my very best hens (out of 50 from last year). At least there's that right?

My name is Justine too. :) Just saying hello, this thread is very informative. I don't have a Plymouth Rock but I hope to get one someday. My husband is wanting to get some Silver Penciled Rocks next year.

Well brutal for me. I'm old and don't like cold. No snow for one thing. Some ice. But it lasts forever. I really meant brutal for the rest of the country. I felt your pain last February. Year before last on groundhogs day it said a early spring. I mean really early. We didn't have any freezes worthwhile the rest of the year. That was a dandy. I didn't garden or have chickens yet. Last year was different. A month behind on everything. It is being said this will be the worst winter for La in 30 years. I have had power outages for 11 days before with no heat. In the teens. I don't want that.
