I got my first live BR chick this morning. It is Freds Hen x XW. It is vigorous and hatched in 8hrs from pip. Second one has internally pipped and chirps but no external pip yet. Xing my fingers. So far Ive only gotten this one chick from 12 eggs confirmed fertile.

Pretty excited today as my two chosen breeders just came into POL a day before their 6 mo. of life. Technically I guess I could call it their 5th month still but I'm not going to split hairs that fine....I'm just jazzed that they are coming into lay in a normal time frame.

Last set of pullets I had didn't come to POL until the 8 mo. and the offspring of one of those is lagging behind as well, so not sure when she will finally hit it. I'm breeding away from slow maturity of that nature...I feel that is extreme.

Will do! These are WRs, though I'm playing around with a barred mutt this breeding season just for funzies, she is only half Rock. I'm super psyched with the size of these pullets, with their form~for F1s~and with their temperaments. Now I'm impressed with their maturity. I'm also impressed that the pullet eggs were a medium and large size if you go by the commercial sizing not bad for first eggs.

Oh, I'm ALL about the cull.

I got no problem at all culling birds, even if that takes me down to a bare few. I appreciate the words of support and encouragement, Yard...it means so very much to have feedback and a cheering section. Especially being a newbie at this intensive breeding of just the one breed...that's all new to me and I'm learning as I go along, so I haunt this thread for the wisdom to be found here.
