One of my young (17wk old) pullets: "Big, Ginormous, Freak Big Head"?

Give her a bit more time. I do not think her head is a round as it might be. If the head shape, accentuated by a long beak, looks oblong it is not attractive and no judge is gonna like it, that is for certain. The head shape should approximate a Silver Dollar more than approximate a watermellon, squished obling look. That's the profile look. From above or straight on, you're looking for width.

That little female in the background was/is a very nice pullet from 2 years ago. I've not bred her yet as I've not had the right male to put over her to fix her crow head. Making a bunch more crowheaded chicks wasn't going to get me anywhere. This spring? Hope springs eternal!!!
I'll do a test mating with a male I hope can fix this. Of course, some pullets are coming along that need no such help, thank goodness.

Here's more crow headedness. Awful.

Now, some pix of wide headed females.

This is why we stress over and over and over that the first 40 pages of the Standard, which is not breed specific, just awesome encyclopedia type information about birds in general, is so very valuable. I think those first 40 pages should be read and re-read, again and again. Especially before making finalists or setting up pens for breeding. Read the book, study the book. Pictures such as this can only help so much.
