Just going into a domicile and taking property without a warrant? is there a smilie for mind exploding??? How about this one...

Without even prior notice to cease and desist the nuisance? I've never heard of such a thing. They didn't even write you a citation? Just ceased the property? That would require at least a judicial order to abate the nuisance. My mind just exploded again. Ow!

On reading the ordinance, it looks like all you need to do to be legal again is get a permit.

You can also argue the "exhibition", but unless you have shown them or can demonstrate that they are exhibition birds, you might not prevail there.

I would attempt to get my permit and my birds back home BEFORE raising a big stink about the officer's conduct. But then...but then...

Then raise a stink that would shame a skunk.

I would leave out the part about how long they were my pets... That is a piece of personal information that does not ad anything to the letter and may work against you in the end. I like the exibition theme... There could be some real leverage here. Get any required permits and go pick up your birds. Find any other nieghbors that may have had the same problem in your area. CL might be a place to ask about. People don't make the news with stories like this but if this is the way they (police) handle things... It could be a matter of reminding them about civil rights. Things go on all the time and ppl become complacent... "It's not my problem"... but if you tap into a pool that has had similar experience you may find some solutions that may not be readily apparent here.

Thanks everyone for your support.

Right now I'm not writing/calling the Mayor. I want to keep all my options open and not burn any bridges in the process.

I took my girls to my friend's house and they will be SUPER happy there. She said I can visit them any time I want to. She spoils her chickens just like I do.

After thinking about it I've decided there is no way that my neighbors would ever let me have chickens again. I live in the wrong neighborhood - too self-important.

Thanks again for your support. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet. I'm still really shocked and......................I really miss my girls.

Catalina, please do not give up without attempting to keep your birds. You sound very shy and unassured. Requiring that people respect you and your property is important--not just for you, but for everyone else as well. There is a saying (Churchill?), "when good men do nothing, evil prospers." You need to surround youself with those who will encourage and support you, those who will give you stgrength.

What happened to you is WRONG on so many levels. Hundreds of thousands of people have died fighting for you to have freedoms that were stolen from you this afternoon. Please do not meekly ignore it--if you do, the problem will not stop--it will grow, and grow, and grow.
