Hi! I've quizzed my carrier nine ways from Sunday and she doesn't have a clue what happens after she drops her mail or how it travels (she's a pal of mine).
She 'carries the mail and delivers it to the address' and if it says PERISHABLE, she would never leave a box in a place where it could 'spoil'.
Having said that, Calvin, our POSTMASTER! likes to make things difficult for the carriers and customers by being a genuine PITA.
eta:
No one in the postal system (that I've encountered) has followed a package to see what endures in transit.
To me, marking an egg box 'Fragile' and "Perishable' is the best you can do.
I labeled a few with ' Eggs For Hatching Enclosed' .

I used to work for the state of GA I can not tell ya what I was doing b/c it is classifed
lets just say unmarked moving trucks through small towns with nuclear stuff in them. POOF!!!
Anyway I know if the state is PAIN IN THE >>5! It can not be any better at the federal level proably worse.

P.S. If you ever see a WHITE CAB AND A GREEN TRAILER WITH A YELLOW STRIPE DOWN THE BACK DOORS
STAY THE 500 FT BACK LIKE THEY ASK!!!!!

I hate to even admit I have 20 years in the postal oriface this August. The biggest problem is automation picture conveyor belts dropping packages into bins and the fact that all that mail has to go TODAY or you will get "written up".The war on terror added a lot more xraying than in days bygone.A little closer to 9-11 I rec'd a seed trade 6 months late w/ NO germination in those seeds ???????????
Another problem is labeling, you can write all over the box but we are looking first at the address or zip.I usually see fragile if its in red above the name.over stamping w/fragile first class and all the little red stamps means I will read one like first class and not the other 35 that say fragile. Also dont send eggs express-they will end up in the bad part of the airplane.np pressure, heat ect

I did not know that about the express shipping, although it makes sense. How would be the best way to ship eggs across country and have them survive? For most people it takes 2-3 days to collect eggs, then for example, mail from Nv. to Ga. takes 4-5 days to get here (we have family in NV.) By that time some of the eggs would already be 7-8 days old, not to mention the other traumas, intentional or not by the PO. Is it just best to keep egg shipping close to home?

Most of our packages come in large sacks. We can't see that an item is fragile or anything else until those sacks are dumped. Then like Chickpea says lots of automated handling. It's amazing that any of them hatch at all.

I take things too personal because I still love the job. hehe Not sure if I will in 20 years, but right now I still feel the need to stand up for it. ;-)

Lol, I actually love the job too. Well most days. lol Ask me again closer to Christmas it may change.
