I just contracted my hay field out to the neighbor for $44/big bale (approx 1100 lbs). That is brom grass hay, clover, small amount of alfalfa.
Not a bad wage for sitting watching the grass grow...

$3-4.50 per small bale. But the tarp to cover it until I need it costs...

DH's alfalfa was only like 3 years old, he just decided he wanted to do an extra 20 acres of wheat, and now he has corn in there, and no plans for reseeding alfalfa, he complains about the neighbors who only feed grass bales cause their cows get skinny over the winter, and now he's going to feed our cows only grass bales...hmmmm well whatever I keep my nose out of his cow business.

I am buying square bales of alfalfa off the truck this weekend for $12 a bale. Last weekend I had to buy it from the local feed store for $15.95. OH.... I envy you for paying a few bucks for your bales. I believe the round rolls (of CRAP) go for $76 right now.
My feed bill is through the roof!

Please...I am OVERJOYED that I am only paying $12 for bales this weekend. Last load was $13 and I GLADLY paid that too! Feed store bales run anywhere from $15 -$19.95. Trust me, I've paid both in the last 2 weeks ( I always run short before the "cheap" truck comes back!)
I do suppliment with the cheaper hay too @ $7.25-$7.95 its a bargain (NOT) We call it coastal, its just a fine stemmed grass hay, pretty much good for giving them something to do.

EAST CENTRAL! Problem is , they want you to buy the whole truck, heck, if I could do that I don't think I would care how much it cost . We get together in my neighborhood and split a truck amongst quite a few people. Also there is the factor of storing it during the hot humid months and I dont have that much room as it is for storing it. I am pretty stocked with the 2 month supply I buy now and I keep a fan running on the alfalfa.

YEP, horse keeping is definately expensive down here.
