I am familiar with many a chicken noise, (The chicken alarm, the boiling tea kettle sound, the regular clucking/honking, the unnerving velociraptor noise of a broody hen not wanting to be petted), but the purring trill is new to me. I have an 11.5 week old partridge rock that does this. I like to sit down and hold and pet the little ones so they will grow up to be friendly, social ladies like my others. Three of them tolerate it, but the partridge rock seems to actually enjoy it. She will happily sit in my lap and let me pet her and proceed to make this purring trilling noise. And then while doing that she likes to scrape and grab my shirt with her really sharp beak (which feels awesome when wearing a thin shirt -___- ). Once the shirt plucking starts it's time to put her down before she draws blood from trying to make a nest out of my clothes.

Other than the pain of a chicken pecking at my side, it's quite cute what she does. I just wanted to know if anyone else has a chicken(s) that likes to cuddle and purr.

And a picture just because I can. She is bottom left btw.

How did you get your chickens to lay on your lap? My girls when they were younger loved to do the same but now they are about 13 weeks and don't really even liked to be touched. I really miss cuddling with my chicks :/ Any advice?
Oh and about being familiar with chicken sounds, My girls started to make a churring sound would you have any idea of what that may mean? I am new to the chickens and would like to learn a bit more about the noises they make.

Sorry I'm a bit late replying to you. Mine are almost 14 weeks now and sometimes they don't care to be messed either, especially if the other 3 are out of sight. I don't exactly remember how I got them all on my lap. At the time they were still living in the basement at night, and when I was putting them all in the crate, one decided she wanted to hop on my lap. The others saw and I guess they figured "Hey if she's doing it, then I better too." And thus 4 pullets on my lap :)

Now the "Churring" sound, were they making that noise when you were holding them? That seemed to be the sound my one pullet was making, a churring, trilling noise. I believe it means contentment.

Getting chickens from a young age helps because there more social to you ( Some chickens just don't like being touched ), I usually pick them up and pat them on the neck and put my hand on there just, sometimes they sit down for a minute or 2 then get up and jump off my lap.
