The Rescued Flock (Pictures Included)

I added a little perch and they love it! Sweet Pea (the one with the curled foot) seems unable to perch so far, but I'm hoping she can learn. I'll have to add a lid soon, since a chick can hop out with a little effort if they perch towards the top.

yes please! pictures!! My bunch love the perch :) we drilled big holes in the plastic bin and pushed a stick we found through it...now time to add another stick a bit higher...all 8 of them try to fit but doesn't work out very well lol

Haha, yes maam! I personally love seeing pictures of other people flocks!

The flock is kept in a temperature controlled room off of my carport, which is unfortunately being used as a storage/ never used workout room. The door creaks something horrible whenever I open it, so I'm always greeted by little cheeps and inquisitive eyes whenever I peek in the brooder. Only a few chicks are heavy sleepers and don't get disturbed whenever I come in.

The chick was indeed sleeping with her head in the feeder. That's the chick that looks similar to Little Chick. (Number 9, I believe) I told everyone hello and goodnight, and she roused herself enough to say hello and then go back to sleep. Silly chickens!

But yeah, definitely going to have to install a lid tomorrow. Chick #8 likes to perch high in the corner, and while the room is small and she can't go anywhere, she'd be without food and water. Plus, all the little chicken poops aren't exactly wanted.

I have some more photos from today here:

The first pictures I posted of everyone were when they were still a little damp. Little Chick doesn't look as miserable in these. Lol. May I say, she was also the only little fart to poop on the towel. Mischievous little chick. My fuzzy footed babes are the flightiest of the bunch. I need to spend some quality time with the pair.

I have the same set up (plastic bin) as you. this is what I did for a lid :)

thats when I first started and the Ducks were small enough to fit in :) I can post picture of what I did for the perch I dont have my leaning like you do i have mine going straight across. But they look so happy! Mine are always sleeping in a circle with their butts inward lol but always wake up before I can get the lid off to get a clear picture.

Nice idea! I don't have the lid to the container anymore, so I was thinking just some chicken wire clipped down would work. Or maybe use the wood/screw setup you have on one handle, and a clip on the other. I'll have to raise the heat lamp a little, but I believe I can slowly start weaning them off now anyway.

Adorable ducks, by the way! :)

yeah, that should work with the handles :) we just had to have the lid bc of our cat lol. I don't think she would do anything ( shes not a normal cat, acts more like a dog) But i didn't want to take the chance and leave the lid off while we were gone. we have a 4 ft fence blocking off both brooders from out 2 8 months Dalmatians and cat but still wanted to take the extra measure! I use a chair to raise the heat lamp. how old is your flock now?

I can sympathize! I have a little cocker spaniel mix who just wants to play with the chicks. He doesn't understand you can't pounce them like you would another dog, so no play time for him.

I'm not sure how old they are. The guy I got them from didn't say. I want to believe they are around two/ three weeks, but that's a very unexpert opinion. Little Chick seems so much younger than Godzilla, and the two fuzzy feet seem to be in the middle of the spectrum, but they seem to be very different breeds so feathering rates will be different.

oh yes, the one dalmatian (deaf) just wants to look...But he doesnt understand shoving his nose in a chickens face is just a little scare for the chicken lol. The one is only 6 days and the others are 10 days old or so, some are 12 days. got them at tractor supply so all different ages haha. Love them all though :) Think we might have one roo on our hands with our Speckled Sussex. Pox doesnt have any tail feathers and everyone else, even the 6 day old has a pretty good start to a tail feather. but only time will tell :)
