The Rescued Flock (Pictures Included)

The crooked toes are a deformity caused by vitamin deficiencies in the mother hen, and also too high of a temp during incubation. So not the poop. Sometimes you can reverse the curled toes by making a chick shoe..you can google it or just do a forum search..anyway, they look to be mixes mostly. The first is not a silkie as it looks to be getting in some normal feathers. They are cute, and should be alright as long as they don't have something terrible.

I don't, but my local TSC is a hop skip and jump away. I believe Little Chick is younger than the rest, or slower to mature. She's fine in the brooder. And for a few minutes outside, but she gets cold very easily.

Do you find she has any problems with them? How severe is the curl?

I'm glad to know it is not because of that. Do you think a boot would still be good at this point? I had heard you have to be rather proactive and boot within the first two days. I don't want to cause her unneeded stress over something that won't work.
It will be very interesting to see what they grow to look like, then! Mysteries are so much fun. :)

It probably won't help to brace their feet now. The curled toes shouldn't affect the chickens quality of life, but may interfere with roosting, but that is not really a big deal. I've seen plenty of happy healthy chickens sleep nestled on the ground...

I just got this hen a couple evenings ago. Someone sold her to me with the crazy toes. I had no idea. So I'm not sure what her past 6 months were like, but she seems fine. Roosts just fine, is a little slower walking and I haven't seen her run. But she has flown up anf hung out on a small wire fence. Also watched her fly/climb really fast up a tiny wire gate when my cat came to the coop.

I agree with you, forgetful, and the others that think a boot will only help if it is done in the first few days of life. She will adapt. I am so glad that these little ones have a good home now.

If you are giving the chicks worms and etc, make sure they have access to chick grit.

Thank you for the information! :)

That is indeed some crazy feet! What a beautiful hen.

I am too! I feel very blessed to have the flock. I've been sprinkling grit for them to scratch at and mixing a little in their feed since I first got them. :D

Please be sure to update!

She is a really pretty girl. I was to busy noticing her awesome goatee to notice the crooked toes.
Here is a pic of the rest of her, just because.

I most certainly will! She is a beautiful color. Do you know what color it is?

Turned everyone in for the night after cleaning out the water dish. They sure know how to fling the bedding in there. Especially the fuzzy footed babies. They scratch and 'dust bath' a lot! I ordered some diatomaceous earth online for them, not sure how long it will be before it comes in though. I've got the flock much more used to me now. I get inquisitive looks instead of fleeing when I stick my hand in. :D

I have no idea. She was sold as a Ameracauna, but I knew she wasn't. She has green legs, so I guess I will call her a Easter egger. Maybe I will have to ask in the breed section.
