Yeah! I have a bunch of Rhodebar chicks but my first F1s went in lockdown today too. Wednesday should be fun... We'll see

I have 14 F1's that made it to lockdown as well as 3 HRIR RC eggs. One of the F1's has already pipped. They aren't due until Tuesday so a little early. I am going to be using the Premier heat plate instead of a heat lamp this go round. I will take pics and post them.

Is that similar to the Brinsea brooders? Those only raise temp 30 degrees above ambient, which doesn't work where I am. I'd love a lower wattage solution that I could use in the barn in winter. My electric bill for the barn has tripled with heat lamps for brooders.

It is similar but the way it works is not to raise the ambient temp. It works like a hen does with her chicks. When the chicks need to get warm they run under it and touch the underside to get warm. There are a couple of threads about the heat plate versus heat bulb as well as a thread comparing the Brinsea and the Premier. I am not sure of what the minimum ambient temp can be in order for it to work properly, however, but I am sure if you call Premier they can tell you.

I have a hen that hatched out a chick during our coldest temps and she has had the chick out of the nest since day 3. When the chick gets cold it will just run under mom for a warm up and then back out into the cold it goes.

I am hoping this works similar to a hen with chicks and makes for stronger chicks.

I love my premier heat plate! That said, I only use it in the feed room of the barn, not the outside brooder. Feed room rarely gets below 50 so I have had no trouble.
I am not to hopeful even for those 4 that made it to lockdown. We've m
lost power twice over the last 2 weeks, one was a long time. Bators got down to 70. We will see. I didn't have the battery backup charged... I won't make that mistake again. Have Rhodebars and HRIR on the ground but haven't hatched any F1 yet. When the power went out I had almost 100 F1 eggs in 5 staggered settings.
