Hooray for chicks!

First five Rhodebar chicks... looks like only one pullet out of the first five... a few more on the way.
These were about dry so I dared a quick open to remove em from the bator and put em under the heat lamp.

Beautiful chicks and good coloring. Where did you get them?

Well... 8 chicks hatched... I'm pretty sure 7 of the 8 are cockerels.
Parents came from Greenfire and are owned by a gentleman here in TN.
I got a fertilized eggs from him.
I was pleased how nice and dark the eggs were.
Anyone see more than 1 pullet in these pics?
Yellow spot on the back of the head is cockerel regardless of how light or dark the chick is right?

Can't believe my luck. Bummer.
That one little girl will sure be a queen... Guess I need to name her Hope.

Nic, Keith, someone who knows a little about Rhodebar genetics... Penny?
Can anyone tell me what I have here?
They are 24-48 hrs old.

I'm not certain of the sex of the lightest ones... darkest one is obviously female...
Am assuming those with obvious spots on the head are male.

Can you telling about barring genes at this age?
These chick's parent came from Greenfire, but that's all I know other than the eggs were a nice dark brown (not green, thank goodness).

Thoughts? I have some excellent RIR I am hoping to improve with... what do I have much to work with here? Am trying to get more education about Rhodebar genetics and have read this thread all the way through twice. I know we have some experienced genetic folks on the list and would really like their opinions.

IMHO, You are correct head spot are all males, females should show the wild-type chick down which your female shows. Dark or light on the males could be several things, some just a matter of fully drying, or even the darker males just carrying 1 barring gene (heterozygous B/b) the lighter ones being homozygous B/B.

Homozygous males would give you better results with RIR, both offspring will be barred. Breed the females back to the Rhodebar male.

Nice looking chicks by the way. Remember if you goal is to improve the breed with some nice RIR, males are a very good thing, they have 2 copies of everything you want to pass on.

LOL This I knew... in theory...

My husband says "Patience Grasshopper".
I was simply hoping for more females to have more options. More options simply means more info. More info means more knowledge.. which is what I'm striving for.
Thanks to everyone who contributes on this thread... Some invaluable knowledge here and I really appreciate the sharing of the knowledge.

With the 21 RIR I have who are only 3 weeks old... well... let's just hope they aren't all males too. LOL

So... in post #845... the three lightest chicks... it's hard to tell if they have spots or not.
If I'm understanding this correctly they "could" be females? And if so, that's bad?

To me they look like males, appears to be head spots. The more yellow chick down may mean they are carrying a wheaten gene, which I would not breed only because its adds to more hatching variables. I only see one female in the group. Hope someone else chimes in for confirmation.

I have been non-stop working on the eb gene while waiting on my Rhodebars to mature.
