The Rhodebar thread!

hope you enjoy your rhodebars as much as I enjoy mine.  great backyard chickens, great layers. mine have been laying steady all winter.  they seem to enjoy the snow , they are out freeranging every day even today they were out most of the day. I got mine from greenfire farms last jan.  they have become our favorites. just had a hen go broody she is sitting on 11 eggs right now.  wishing you the best of luck with your rhodebars!!

thanks tlmotzkus
am a little confused about the aut sexing...some are darker but have the white spit on the head...any hints?

Head Spot should be boy no matter how dark or light. The lighter ones could be double barred and the darker with head spots could be single barred, but regardless head spot is a boy. Good Luck they look nice.

Double barred males are lighter in color.... and should have allot less black barring in their coloring...remember a Rhodebar is simply a RIR that the barring gene has been added to... in all other aspects they should look like a RIR... not a Leghorn or Barred Rock...

takes work.. a good eye....

Correction. .. If they are purebred Rhodebars then ALL boys will be double barred.
If you are looking at and documenting chick down to evaluate for future breeding, cull the yellow chicks if you get any or any that have less obvious heat spots. The darker down boys will produce more easily autosexed birds.

If you get a male who is single barred then you do not have pure birds. The females should be single barred however

Please note that several of us on here are breeding F1s (crossing or Rhodebars back with HRIR), so we are looking for somewhat different results. Just didn't want those posts to confuse you.

Thanks for the info Makomd
which is the most desirable?

See previous post...
Rhodebar females are single barred, males are double barred if they are pure Rhodebar.

Double or single barred? I was told by the breeder he is double, but he's darker in color. This pair is 8 months old.
Hmm. .. That cockerel is double barred but that female is awfully light. Pay close attention to down color if you chose to breed those two and choose your next generation breeders carefully .
