The Rhodebar thread!

At how many weeks of age were you able to determine that tail growth might be sex related and not just growth rate related?

Sheri here is a couple of pics of chicks from my 2nd batch. You can see that my darker lined chick has a much longer tail then my lighter (medium) lined chick at the same age.

Guess I need to set up a brooder in my room instead of 600' away at the barn. ROFL

LOL, trust me you don't want to do that. All of my dark striped chicks in second batch have longer tails. Lighter chicks (medium and light) are just starting to get their tails and some only have tail fuzz.

Quote: So here is an interesting tidbit... I'm guessing @melroseladi will find it interesting anyway...

I have 16 chicks in 6 different groups.
6 of the 16 appear to have much more "tail"
One from group 2a, three from group 3a (all three), and 2 of the 5 in group 3b.

It all made sense until group 3b where there is an obvious difference.

As an aside... the entire batch appears to be split about 50/50 SC to RC.

Sheri are the tail noticeably longer? Watch those ones, they should be your females. None of my lighter striped ones have as long of tails as my dark striped ones.

Your hens are split R/r that is why you are getting SC. That is why I am not breeding my RC with any of my SC because he is split. I am not sure if my hen is split or not but if she is then I could end up with some SC as well (in my Reds).
