Yep...I shuck the more meatless birds out of their skin and take the breasts, thighs and legs. You don't even have to gut it that way.

If you will watch the first video I offered, there is a link right on it to the second video where a lady cuts up the chickens they are processing....simple and fast.

Dog, did you happen to see the one from Smyers about the egg peritonitis? That post and the pics of her necropsy would be a valuable tool on your site, I'm thinking. It was so textbook that I think many would gain insight on the reasons to cull birds that are not good layers, too old to lay, have reproductive issues, etc.

Where do I find that one... or was it one you posted a link to on this thread a day or two ago?? I'll go back and look through, but I have an appointment with a horse in 30 minutes.

I'll get on it later today once I find it. I'll have to contact her, too.

Bee - this is for you:

I have 4 pure bred Great Pyrenees pups born 10-18-12 (2 male 2 female) Mom and Dad are both excellent guardians. The pups have been introduced to poultry and my goat from the time they could walk (just about a week now 11-14-2012) They are well socialized, will have first shots and worming, I have been working with them bathing every 3-4 days (these dogs get BIG so a calm GP in the tub is well appreciated :) )

I take them to the chickens and work with them daily but they are inside right now most of the day. I cannot promise a poultry safe pup right away as it takes time to train, but I am giving them the best start as LGD's I can.

Local pick up only, PM me if interested. North/East WV

Bathing them every 3-4 days???

What a JOB she has made for herself! What miserable dogs! Before long she will start complaining of them having hot spots, I bet. It's miserable for a heavy coated dog like a GP to be kept indoors in the winter time. They suffer so much from the heat...then, if you keep them indoors too much, they shed that lovely insulating layer that keeps them warmer when they ARE outside during the day.

Folks are strange, aren't they? Always wanting something for its wonderful qualities...but lets just change it, shall we, to suit our little lives, who cares about the animal's comfort? GPs are outside dogs, period. One only has to vacuum up the whole extra dog that comes off of them daily to know this fact.

Clem loves to sit in water. She'll jump in the geese pool if I let her. Crazy thing.

I think leash training them would be better than bath training them, as I have never once given Clem a real bath. Brushing is all I do in that respect. :)

Oh and yea.. They shed something fierce! Even as puppies! I can only imagine it will get worse :th

If you look back their breed lines you won't find them too far from Labrador Retrievers. Mine was a mix of the two and HATED water...had to be dragged into the river for a bath a couple of times during each summer. I did that to just get rid of some of that sour undercoating left over from the winter months. They will literally shed two or three dog's worth of hair each year.

I don't think she would mind and you might ask her a little history on this hen as far as age of the hen and laying history. It may build some background for her malady.

And maybe a video or two? Just some good ol' country folks showing us how it's done without all the holding, petting and trying to be sweet to the chicken before the deed. Just plain , simple gettin' it done.
Finally just getting time to look at these videos. This first one is excellent! He made it look pretty attainable.

Where do you get one of those chicken pluckers?
