If you are going to SSS it might be wise to NOT talk with the neighbor. She knows her dog runs loose and loose dogs meet with dire happenings...any adult person knows this. In other words, she doesn't care if her dog is standing in the road or marauding through the neighborhood and doesn't care if he gets hurt or dies horribly out there. Best if the animal just disappears and leave it at that. If she gets anymore dogs after you eliminate that one and continues to let them run free, do the same silent removal of that/those dogs also until this thick skulled person finally gets the idea that her dogs will disappear when she lets them run loose.

Sometimes it's the only way. Also...I'd be buying up fencing a little at a time and put it up as you get the funds and time~even if it's just a good fence for just around your chicken's range only. Good fences make good neighbors!

You are right about not talking to her ....that's why I have held off for now, still thinking about plan of attack......they have one dog (twin to the killer dog) that was shot about three years ago, lost a leg but survived...the two dogs were running deer and someone somewhere got her...the two look like yotes, so it's easy to mistake them. Fencing is the first plan ...but we haven't a spare dime for anything right now. Will see if we can trade for fencing or something like that. Meanwhile we are reworking what we do have to make it better.

Melabella, that's kind of the way it has been here...the dogs used to come and "play" or greet our dog when we had him out they are/were sweet dogs. But they have one problem, they chase/run/hunt and now the one has tasted chicken. We have 2 acres...so far the chicken guardian angel has been working overtime for ours, but not for someone else's chicken, we think we know where that chicken came from. There are only 3 of us on the road that have chickens that I know of. Hope things stay mellow for you. If it had just been "chicken bowling" it would have been one thing, but now there has been a kill....so it's not just bowling with chickens.

I hear ya Pullet, that is why your post scared me into thoughts of reality. DH thinks everything is just perfect here and Jack(our LSGD) is the reason we have no problems, but I know better. My flock is in lockdown at night, with a fortress and a fortune spent on their attached run, so if anything happens it will be during the day. I would feel horrible to come home and see a dead chicken on the road. I am the only one that has them anywhere near. Actually, there is a woman with some a half mile down the road. There is a bird dog that come though, and German SHorthaird Pointer, who is a chicken chaser, but thankfully someone spoke to the owner, and I haven't seen him since. I think it would be him if I have a problem. Old neighbors who rented the house next door to me, had two pet chickens, and I caught him carrying one off one day. I stopped the car in the middle of the road, commanded him to "release" and he did. Poor bird was scared stiff, but she was fine.. She had slobber all over her, no bite marks as a good gun dog should never do, but with her struggling, I am sure his grip was getting tighter and tighter. I am sure he was just bringing her home to papa like a good boy. Glad I caught him in the act.

I would feel better if it was a good bird dog we were dealing with, unfortunately we are not.

I hear ya. I'm thankful not to be in your shoes. I actually have talked to my neighbors and not a one would report me for firing a gun in the city. Because they know I'm responsible about it all and not going to endanger anyone. If the shot passes through the animal it will go in the ground. Otherwise I won't fire.

I ama' thinking about digging out the ol' air soft gun....we are in the 'country' and people shoot on their own property here all the time...but shooting the dog is the absolute last resort and I mean LAST...a good paint ball hit might work too. I just don't even want to think about it right now. Now that I've said that, crap is going to happen (always seems to work that way!

caught a deer hound chasing my chickens yesterday.could have shot the dog but instead caught it, put it on tie cord and called owner from number on collar. they picked up the dog after dark and didn't even thank me. will shoot the next one.

Good fences do make good neighbors... we have a rent farm next to us and they seem to take in stray cats and dogs by the dozen. I love animals but when the owners don't really care for them and let them roam where ever, then they should be prepared when they Disappear. our next door neighbor had a female GS dog that would sneak over an attack ours. Twice I had emergency vet trips because of it. My DH told them wouldn't be a third and they kept it tied up. we have the wireless fence- but doesn't keep out the neighbors animals.
