Oh my heck people... out all day with the horses, and riding...(unseasonably warm today here in NY), and I have 100+pages to catch up on dailies.

This poor baby.. after I got passed feeling for him, my first thought was... those poor hungry chickens! Not sure what country this is,, but they sure could use some DL, and good forage and some nice FF to fill their crops instead of that silly bag of corn! Their yard is one big dust bowl!
I saw all of that too, and was wondering why the Adults were letting this poor kid continue to run a muck instead of feeding the poor things. I was feeling sorry for the birds. lol

I always place my needs (especially ridiculously expensive, out of reach ones like new houses, cars, refrigerators and wood stoves and bigger coops) in the hands of the Almighty. I never worry about when or how. I just put it out there, and then move back to being grateful for what I have, already.
Never, ever fails and is always so much cooler and of better quality than I could have imagined.

ALWAYS works for me too... ask and you will be given, knock and the door will open. I am so thankful that God takes care of my needs.

even if with the time diff,I'm still late to the party.LOL hopefully a Long story ,kept short.
grew up in the outskirts of a city ,spent all my life ,til 5 yrs, ago climbing the corporate ladder .got very sick had to stop work.Other half left (no income no stay)
lost everything .so easy to go broke ,when u can't work, with high medical bills.was put on a disability pension .
ended up living in a very rundown house ( had been empty for 5yrs +) on a farm 110 miles from a town , owned by the father of an acquaintance I had helped out 13 yrs previously.
lucky or I would have been homeless.
Any hoo - about 18 mths ago,I got 4 BA pullets from the local poultry club auction, for eggs & to give me a hobby to keep me occupied.
Gradually lost one ,then another over a couple of months .put it down to bad genetics (other ppl's culls) .still had 2 going well.started searching for more (too expensive etc )so purchased a Light Sussex trio ,borrowed a incubator hatched 18/19 .

a friend that was moving, gave me deposit receipt for a good BA rooster, she had ordered.so picked him up ,now had a BA trio ,OK I can breed some more BA's.
lost my best hen to illness ?
found BYC & BEE

1 hen +1 rooster = not good for the hen-
decided to sell the Light Sussex when the chicks reached POL.currently 8wks old
reason - not good foragers, feed gluttons ,noisy, not as settled as the BA's
I would get good purebred BA fertile eggs to hatch ,purchased 1dz ($90) from a stud ,not good fertility- hatched 2.currently 5 wks old
2 wks ago purchased 3 purebred pullets from a stud that was devastated x floods (now in quarantine tractor )

so that's where I'm at now
cheers Pete
Pete, no Australorps?

I don't know. My birds chase me around when I have a treat they love, even though they are fed well. Do agree on the barren ground though :p

I am too grossed out by mealworms to feed it to them. I have fed them nightcrawlers. Yep. Watch out!

When I garden, my birds stalk me. They help me dig for worms :p

I just LOVE when they help me in the spring, as we have a ton of June bugs around here, and they eat up the larvae. Makes me shudder.. Junebugs have an awful memory for me.. I was in grade 4. Last day of school.. A Junebug was in my hair, and my teacher actually killed it with a ruler and I had dead Junebug in my hair the whole bus ride home. The ruler did not hurt. I yelled to get it out. I didn't tell her to smoosh it! :sick

We had June bugs when i was growing up in FL. I never have liked any kind of bug with a hard body, just grosses me out, Roaches, especially, so glad we don't have many things like that here in the mountains. How awful to have a smashed June bug in your hair. lol I feed dried mealworms, wish I had the space to grow my own, they are pricey dried ,I buy in bulk. I only feed them in the winter when bugs aren't available for protein. All I have to do is bring out the shovel and I can't even dig for being surrounded.

Isn't it fun digging worms with your birds though? :D

The old girls are the ones that like this pastime most. They don't have to like being handled to like digging with you :)

Junebugs are like flying roaches if you ask me.
They go straight for your face here. Campfires are a nightmare until after they are out of season. They will fly straight for your face/open mouth. You hear them buzzing around. they are LOUD.

Here we have a lot. Only bug that really creeps me out around here.. If we were talking those spiders you have out south, that's another story. We don't have any really dangerous bugs/reptiles here at all. I appreciate spiders, bees, ladybugs, etc. As long as they don't fly in my face. I never kill spiders.

I saw two mice in the barn this morning. I need a good barn cat. My fiance does not want anymore. We've lost two cats this year because of the roads. :(

the 3 Pekin girls are drinking a little and shaking their tail feathers. Not interested in eating. I even gave them left over baked apples, one of their favorites. But it has only been 24 hours since the attack roughly.
