Made the holly ring for the birds. Camera shy

I tried to catch them eating it. It will be gone by tomorrow, they love it.

They love that FF!! out of all 40 some chicks I only kept two pullets.

Nah...not at all. I get that reaction every time I post that and was just a little surprised to see it here.
I don't think you are or were seeing it here ..... In an earlier post you said you had not found any research that showed too much calcium hurt young chicks kidneys .... Aoxa was, as far as I could tell, offering up her research thinking you had not seen it and thus asking your opinion on it. She was not attacking your method just asking for advice.

You know? I like their looks and size but when I read about their laying, it always comes up "very good" or 4 eggs per wk. A four egg per week gal is a cull in my flocks unless she is really ancient. I may change my mind on all that when I start culling for free ranging only birds...those that produce on free range, spring through fall. Can't expect high laying on that kind of life but I'm sure going to start with high and adjust my expectations down as I go along.
They are documented to lay better than an australorp (who is average) Chantecler are classified as average to above average.

I'd love to have some, because I'm all into preserving rare breeds. And a Canadian rare breed? Count me in. I have a friend that raises them, I'll be trading her chicks for chicks sometime next year.

Scare them into free ranging, well I never!

What are your girls' crests like? I know mine can barely see. Poor things. I like that about them, but need to trim for safety.

Poor ranging silkie

Roo that can see really well and does very good on free ranging. He's always eyes on the sky. Love this boy. He's my Mr. Broody.
