It would be fun as all get out...but I doubt anyone would think I was a chicken expert. Least of all me....

Too different from the masses out there writing the books and doing the tours. But I sure would love it! Wouldn't need anything more than the gas money and somewhere to stay and eat....

Set me up with a speaking engagement and evaluation of group's flocks and setups and I'm there!!!!

Gnarly Bunch Update: Two eggs...and that Little Red Hen, the New Hamp of 6 yrs of age, is my daily layer! During molt, no less. What a trooper! One medium, brown and speckled egg each day containing an enormous orange yolk....can't beat that.

Made storm windows for the coop today from small PVC pipe, duct tape and plastic....didn't turn out bad, if I do say so myself.

Still vying for the Redneck Coop Contest winner...

Sold the old truck and they came to pick it up today....there goes my killing truck and processing table.

Also took away Mildred's(the Partridge Rock hen)nighttime roosting spot and the chicken lounge/dusting spot for the flock. Whatever will we all do???

As mentioned before, did foot care on old Middle Sister and hope to see good results so that I won't have to cull her until I see if she will be laying come spring. She is putting on weight...much heavier when I lifted her today than previously.

Some wrong choices are so clearly wrong that we don't even need to think about it. Neglecting a child? Never right.

It's when a choice looks so clearly right, and the alternative seems so wrong, that we need to drop our assumptions -- which we may not, until now, have even thought were assumptions rather than facts -- that we rather painfully learn and grow.

Not speaking directly at cowcreekgeek or Beekissed or anyone in particular. Well, maybe directly at myself.

Well, that's why you would be a hit--because you are different, down to earth and really know your stuff. Urban chicken owners are a phenomenom that I don't think will go away. And, these are the same people who want to use natural and organic methods with their families. We are a large contingent of people who have lost touch with our roots and you haven't! I will make enquiries in Atlanta. I would think a small group of people could pool their resources to get you here or any other major city. A lot cheaper than a vet. We could call you the Chicken Doctor. See!! after all those years of nursing and now you are a doctor.

Life is a learning process, ain't it? Keeping livestock is a great teacher, as is having and raising children....so many choices, so much strength is required to get it done, so many roads one could go down and then find it's a dead end.

I like the journey and the learning....I LOVE learning. I guess it's why I do these experiments and am always trying to find new and better ways to do an old thing. And it always gives me some gratification to find that the new and better way is really just an old way that had been forgotten until now.

Not the Whisperer? Or is that already taken...I believe someone put out a book about being a Chicken Whisperer or some such?

When I had my massage therapy business(medical type massage for pain relief therapy) a lot of my patients were elderly and one, in particular, would call me Dr. Julie. I kept telling her that I wasn't a doctor but she was such a sparky little lady and she would tart right back at me, "Yer a doctor to ME! You fixed me when the doctors having been tryin' fer years!" She was so darn cute!!!! 92 years old and was taking care of a 94 yr old lady in her own home! She actually broke her back having a coughing fit once...which brought her to me...and later broke it again while quilting.

She would walk clear across town to get to my office because riding the bus hurt too bad....LOVE older patients!

Maybe I should give a little background on what I know about natural and herbal...and I'm still learning:)

When I was 8 years old (now 44), my Grandmother was diagnosed with cancer (rare back then). She has 3 specialists that told her she would not make it. She also caught TB at 14 years old from her parents (they were both nurses during the war). I remember in the middle of the street n SF she would cough up blood from TB when she would take us grandkids on outings (she tried living in dry climates before...but she followed my Mom to where we moved...Dad in the military). She also used to sleep upright in a chair sometimes to keep up from coughing up blood. She had a cat with leukemia and she was taking her cat in for blood transfusions (I think she was trying to save her cat...because she felt that she was at a loss on her own health). The vet saw the deep circles under her eyes and asked her what her health problem was. She told him. He saved her life. Told her to cleanse her system with wheatgrass juice, raw food, sprouts, etc.

She kicked both cancer and never any bout with TB again. Cancer and disease cannot live in clean blood. She's turning 92 this next month:) When I was young, and I would stay the weekend with her, she would tell me stories of the depression, what they did, how they lived...and give me many tidbits on her research to combat disease (including herbs). Sometimes , we would look at the clock after talking and it was 2AM. My parents would have had me asleep by 9PM. Good times and great learning:) She's an avid reader and no internet back then. Now, I look up her advice on the internet and there it is. She also told me not to consume soy unless it's fermented for at least 18 months (miso, soy sauce, etc). Thanks to her...never touched it and I've been feeding my flock soy-free for the last 3 years (I'm sure I'll get flack for those that swear by the 'protein' of soy...but is it fermented?). Asia considered it toxic until they learned how to 'ferment'. (look it up...I trust my Grandmother) and I know too many people with side affects with the 'soy trend'.

Love this fermenting thread:) Where did this cancer come from? I asked her and her reply is not letting go of anger. It doesn't matter what you eat. If you have anger inside you and you can't let it go,... it will manifest and cause disease. Her father beat her, her mother and her siblings. So much so that her mother sent all 4 kids to an orphanage when she was dying at a young age (did I say that we stayed up until the wee hours talking?). Then she married an abuser (the cycle) and her husband (my 'paternal granfather' was the same). Never met him. My Mom and her Sister were born. She left him and 'divorced; him...again unheard of back then. Anyhow, she thinks built up hatred causes cancer. She had soooo much pent up anger and resentment and then let that go when she was healing.

Because of my Grandmother, I've always been interested in natural remedies. Then farm animals came around. This is when I really started studying organic/holistic/herbs...whatever you want to call it. Now I'm going to school to become a master herbalist. That means nothing to me...it's the learning curve that I love. And I love to share. Take it or leave it....

Questions are welcome though...it helps my research and it might help me come up with a thesis;) Again...no expert though...
