Chapter 27: Cake
Olympia of Midnight was frantic when the Girl with Great Hands came outside on a gray autumn morning, a shallow red bowl in her hands.
"What's so special about that bowl? It looks like mud inside," Fatima of the Gold-dust Feathers grumbled. She was having a bad day- between the weather, the new cold, and the Small Ones growing larger than her good self, Fatima was in a VERY bad mood.
Olympia gazed at her with scorn. "Don't act newly hatched," the older hen scoffed. "That's cake!"
"Cake?" Fatima tried the word out in her beak. It was delicious-sounding. "What's cake taste like?"
Olympia's dark brown eyes clouded with blissful memory. "Heaven," she decided.
Fatima thought it was very strange to eat sky, but said nothing. Olympia was clearly a lost cause.
The Great-Handed Girl squatted down and made happy noises as she moved the dark brown cake from the bowl to her lips with a shiny fork. Fatima watched the fork, dimly wondering if it was any good to eat. Then, apparently satisfied with her meal, the Girl opened the run door and offered the red bowl to Fatima. As always, Fatima was astounded that the Girl had left almost half an ounce of crumbs. The wastefullness of the Great-Handed Ones never failed to amaze her.
Then the rich taste of the crumbs hit her. Cocking an orange eye at Olympia, who was being restrained by the Girl, Fatima sent a silent thought to her. You were right!
Olympia didn't get the message. Instead, she gave Fatima the Death Glare. "The Girl's saying that she really shouldn't give you much more than that, and chocolate's bad for you," she translated, perturbed. "Leave me some, Teema, or you'll be very sorry."
Having no doubt that Olympia meant every word, Fatima backed away. "Cake," she clucked blissfully. "Who'd have thought sky would taste so lovely?" Briefly wondering how the Ones With Great Hands had managed to get sky into that shape, size, and color, Fatima wandered away. Maybe if she flapped high enough, she could take another bite of sky...
