Chapter 13: What is Wrong?
The day was warm and Fatima of the Gold-dust Feathers was restless. The interesting new sound she had discovered kept popping back into her throat. The Great-Handed girl had to run about catching Fatima when she got out of the coop. Instinct told Fatima to head to the bale of hay, where she promptly sat, giving the Girl stink-eye. The Girl with Great Hands stopped, puzzled at this strange behavior. However, Fatima could not answer this question because she herself did not know the answer.
"What is wrong with me?" she asked Olympia of Midnight. She was worried about the strange quality of her voice, tainted with the alien cheirping that was so unknown to her.
"Are you broody?" replied Olympia matter-of-factly. "You act weird when you're going broody. I should know."
Fatima considered this. "Maybe," she said doubtfully. "But I don't feel like I want to sit on eggs, and I'm not sick. What can it be?"
Olympia, indeed, or anyone else, had no answer for her.
