The Sap Collector's Thread

Wowwww just went out and to check the buckets and overflowing. Trees are running like crazy today. Biggest run yet. Wonder if its because we got some rain.

Pulled my taps a week ago as I had more sap than buckets for storage. Been poor boiling weather, cold and windy, hard to keep a good boil going. Constructed a ramshackle sugar shack yesterday with some scrap lumber and barn tin I had lying around. $20 for stovepipe as all my cheap sources were out, had to get it off the dusty shelf at the local hardware store.

Trees do seem to run more with light rain or snow. Don't know if its a barometric pressure deal or moisture or just coincidence. Ground frost going out seems to be the big trigger. My sap has been yielding more lately. Approaching 20:1 which is amazing even for open grown yard trees. Getting a light to mid amber syrup with phenomenal flavor. Just broke the 4 gallon mark yesterday! Probably about 2 gallons left to boil down. Been a good year and springtime layoff due to road restrictions is giving me time to give it my all.

@Ole and Lena Have you ever made maple sugar from your syrup? There is a thread on here from Frugal that shows how to do it, and I was wondering if it was as easy as he made it look. I think it would be a tasty addition to the kitchen supplies.

Yea I pulled almost 15 gallons from one tree the other day.

She has 3 taps in her. Im tired of boiling lol. Its been nice to have this 2 day break the sap has slowed down. Still got 20 gal on deck to boil.

I thought I was done and now I have another 30 gallons to boil down...I guess I could pull the taps....maybe tomorrow

Things are slowing down, Think its time to pull the taps also. Been a Fun season , Thanks for all the input. We will have to fire this thread back up next season lol.

I just finished my 5th year making maple syrup. Really great and early season for us. I actually ran out of firewood for the evaporator. I only gave up on making more because of lack of wood, and out of energy! 13.5 gallons of syrup this year, my best yet.
