The Scarlet Letter

Okay just read the first 2 chapters and holy wow I'm lost. Now I'm not asking for answers, just help. I can already tell this thread is going to have to be in a bibliography

Jornal Entry 1: What is the narrator's attitude toward the Prutians? What is his attitude towards Hestor?

I am lost on the Puritans. It rambled for a whole page about them, but I didn't get it. I read it twice more and still didn't get it. It was talking about punishing people in public and all that.....

With Hester I've gathered the narrator don't like her. Saying they should brand her head??? And talking of how she's a hussy. She'd never get married.

"Little will she care what they put upon the bodice of her gown (Hawthorne 45)." This is talking about the scarlet letter right? I guess it didn't bother her to be branded such- she just covered it up?

Well said!
You can also get the Cliff Notes for it, not as a substitute to reading but as a sort of guide. They help if this is your first time wading through an assignment like this.

Honey, you're not going to get all the answers in the first two chapters, not that kind of book. It's still very much setting the scene. No silly the whole point of the letter A is to make the sin she committed, Adultry, a public shaming, she can not cover it, she must have it on display at all times.

The way the assignment is set up is you read 2 chapters and write a journale entry. Then 2 the next 2 chapters. Write another journal entry. THEN when you've done all chapters, reread the entire book and look for flashbacks and foreshadowing. Stupid in my opinion

Naw, now if she only read the sparknotes and didn't read the book, that's cheating, if she copies the notes, it's plagerasim, if she only rented the movie, well that' stupid, the movie omits key parts of the book. But we all know that tacking this with nearly no instructions from her teachers and no way to ask questions is not a good assingment model, so time to wiki it, and use that as a reading guide.

Boo, make sure you read the book as well, okay honey?

I was only kidding...Shes being a good girl and reading the book also..
