Chapter 11

Weeks passed without any sign of Thunder. Gradually, the scars from the battle had begun to fade, and Foxshadow's wound was healing nicely. Sorrelfur was glad, but she felt a nagging fear deep in her stomach. She couldn't help worrying that Thunder might become active again soon, or that he was planning something huge. She shook her head; fretting over things she couldn't control would get her nowhere.

As the stars of Silverpelt began to fade and the sky grew milky with soon to come dawn, Sorrelfur stretched, her body quivering as she did so. She caught a glimpse of Foxshadow's fluffy flame-red tail weaving away into the netting of brambles outside the cave. Purring with amusement, she padded after him. He spun around as he felt the brambles quiver.

"Oh, uh... hi," he stammered.

"Sneaking out again?" Sorrelfur purred, pressing her muzzle into Foxshadow's shoulder.

"Not at all!" He replied quickly.

Sorrelfur purred. "Oh, yeah, sure. Want to go hunting?"

"Sure," Foxshadow meowed, clearly glad to change the subject. He padded through the brambles with Sorrelfur, his jaws open as he tasted the air.

They trotted down to the lake, following the scents of rabbit, vole, mouse, and just enjoying the clear air. The moon still glowed high in the sky, and the sun wasn't up yet, but the sky was milky pale. Sorrelfur put her nose to the ground, her jaws parted as she took in all the scents. The strongest was magpie; it had just been here, and she could even see its tracks. Dropping into a crouch, Sorrelfur stalked after it, freezing when she saw it pecking through the grass. Bunching her hind legs, she was ready to pounce when it let out an alarm call and flew away. She lifted her head, and saw Foxshadow leaping at some ducks.

"Agh!" Foxshadow snarled. "Get over here!" He leaped at a duck that was flying away in a flurry of feathers and squawking, catching only a mouthful of tail feathers.

Sorrelfur's ears pinned, and her fur began to rise. "What are you doing?!" She snapped. "You're going to scare away all the prey all the way here to Fourtrees!" Fourtrees was a hollow by the House of the Elders, guarded by four great oaks, hence its name.

Foxshadow blushed, "sorry, Sorrelfur," he meowed quietly.

"'Sorry' isn't going to bring that magpie back," she growled, stalking off. She pressed her nose to the ground, and began to track a rabbit. She resisted the urge to swish her tail in anticipation. She smirked as she saw the rabbit nibbling on some wild flowers. Slowly, she inched forward, and bunching her hind legs, she pounced swiftly on its back. It let out a squeal, before it fell limp in her jaws. She looked back, and saw Foxshadow with a duck.

"Finally caught it?" She joked, dropping the rabbit and burying it to collect it later.

"Yes," Foxshadow muttered. He began to bury his duck, his fur fluffed out. "Don't tease me about it."

"Why not?"

"I couldn't help it that the stupid thing happened to look my way," he growled.

"Aw, come on. Lighten up." She patted her paws on the ground to firm the ground.

"Hush," Foxshadow whispered.

"Hey!" Sorrelfur growled.

"Shh!" Foxshadow urged.

"Don't you 'shh' me!" Sorrelfur snapped.

"Don't you hear that?" Foxshadow retorted. Sorrelfur's ears swiveled as she picked up a distant sound, coming from the lake. She didn't know what it was at first; then it clicked. Someone's in danger!
