Well, now I prove you wrong!

Chapter 13

"Like that?" Crowfrost inquired, landing on all four paws as he skidded around to face Sorrelfur on the ground.

"Perfect!" Sorrelfur meowed. Bluestar had assigned her to mentor Crowfrost about a moon ago, and the little tom got better every day. He'll be a great fighter, she thought, then with a purr, if he's not already. "Can you do that again, this time funneling your power into your paws?"

"Sure," meowed Crowfrost, bunching his hind legs. As he lunged for Sorrelfur, lava formed on his paws, and Sorrelfur nearly singed her tail as she leaped out of the way. "Like that?"

"That's the best one yet!" Sorrelfur meowed in satisfaction. Crowfrost's tail swished with happiness, and smiling, he looked up at Sorrelfur. For a minute, their blue eyes locked, and Sorrelfur felt a flutter in her chest. What am I feeling? she wondered. Nothing seemed to be able to break their gaze.

"Sorrelfur!" Foxshadow called, and Sorrelfur wrenched her gaze away from the handsome black and white tom's eyes.

"What?"

"Bluestar wants us to hunt," Foxshadow meowed.

"Can he come?" Sorrelfur asked, pointing with her tail to Crowfrost. She didn't understand why she wanted to be around Crowfrost so much, but she did.

"No," Foxshadow shook his head. "Feathertail and Tapska are coming instead, since he hunted this morning."

"Oh," Sorrelfur replied, trying to hide her disappointment. Knock it off! "Go get a piece of fresh-kill off the pile," she ordered Crowfrost. "You did great work today."

"Thanks!" Crowfrost meowed happily, dashing off into the cave. Sorrelfur smiled , feeling a warm feeling as she watched him go. She didn't know what she felt when she looked at the little tom. She shook her head, deciding not to go deep into her thoughts before she went hunting.

Sorrelfur scraped earth over her catch; a fat, juicy muskrat. Her mouth watered at the tempting, delicious scent, but she fought the urge, knowing fully well that the team needed to be fed first. The prey was well-fed and copious, and Sorrelfur could smell scents coming in from all directions. She heard the ferns rustle behind her, and she turned. It had come from the roots; it was obviously prey. She debated on whether or not to take it. I've already hunted so much prey that I don't know if I can bring it all back, she pondered, but, oh well. One more little vole or mouse won't hurt. She dropped into a crouch, and between the leaves, she could see a fat rabbit, nibbling away at the evergreen grass shoots. She bunched her hind legs, ready to spring, when suddenly the rabbit's ears shot up in alarm, and it bolted away. "Crap!" She cursed. She saw Smokey racing towards her, flapping his wings to gain speed. "What was that for?!" Sorrelfur snapped, "I was this close to getting that rabbit!"

"I'm sorry," Smokey gasped, "but you need to come back to the cave right away. Thunder's attacking!"

Alarm shot through Sorrelfur like bullets. She felt the ground sway beneath her paws, and she faltered, feeling weak in her legs for a moment. The first thing she thought was, Crowfrost! "Let's go, then!" Sorrelfur cried, springing above the wall of Johnson grass and pelting away at lightning speed. As she approached the cave, she looked around wildly. "CROWFROST!" She yowled, but her voice was barely discernable above the wild screeches of battle. She saw an eagle dive for her, and she swung around, but too early. The eagle collided head-on with her, and her vision went hot white, along with a searing pain through her skull. She gasped, reeling backwards. She opened her eyes just in time to see the eagle try and take another swipe at her. She jumped sideways, just barely missing it. With unsheathed claws, she swung fiercely at the eagle, knocking it away. The eagle was stunned, and it bought her enough time to flee into the sea of fighting creatures, searching frantically for Crowfrost. Why am I more concerned about Crowfrost than Foxshadow? That doesn't matter! She thought she heard a yowl inside the cover of evergreen trees by the cave. Heart plummeting, she raced inside. Crowfrost was single-handedly taking on an owl and two toms. Sorrelfur felt a surge of admiration at his bravery, leaping at one of the toms who was coming up behind him. The tom let out a screech of surprise, and Sorrelfur opened up his powers to her. Telekinesis. She smirked as she snatched it away, harnessing it for herself. And just to drive him crazy, small wisps of it still whirled around him, just out of reach. As the tom's claws hit her cheek, she felt blood well up and drip down onto the grass. Hissing, she hooked a leg around his belly, and heaved upwards, knocking the tom backwards and knocking the wind out of him. She smirked in satisfaction as she saw the tom flee into the bushes, yowling.

"Sorrelfur, behind you!" Crowfrost yowled. Sorrelfur whirled around just in time to see the owl taking a dive at her. She leaped nimbly out of the way, but didn't see the other tom dive for her. She gasped as she was pinned to the ground. She pawed wildly, but to no avail. The tom grasped her throat in his teeth, and began to bite down, ready to finish Sorrelfur off.

"Nooo!" Crowfrost yowled, slamming into the tom's side. The tom grunted, wrestling with Crowfrost. Sorrelfur felt a roar of emotion nearly overwhelm her, spinning around just in tim to see the owl again. She slammed her paws into its side, hooking her claws in and shaking the bird like it was nothing but a mere ragdoll. Letting out a screech of pain, it flew away in a scurry.

"You cowards!" The tom jeered, but uncertainty glinted in his eyes. As he saw Sorrelfur come to Crowfrost's side, growling, he took a half reverent, half reluctant step back. "I'll kill you both soon, even if it's not today, you disgusting fox hearts!" With that, he pelted into the bushes.

The noise of battle was beginning to die down. Thunder's soldiers were retreating. Crowfrost turned to Sorrelfur, his eyes glinting in concern. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine." She gave a gash on her shoulder a few firm, quick licks, wincing a bit at the stinging pain, which was growing as the adrenaline from battle wore off. She turned to him, "how are your wounds?"

"They're okay," he meowed, then with a purr of amusement, he added, "I'd be crowfood if you hadn't stepped in there."

Sorrelfur purred, "I would be, too. Thanks for saving me." As they padded back to the cave, Sorrelfur felt immensely happy just being by Crowfrost's side, despite all that had happened. However, all that vanished when she came upon the clearing. Much to her relief, Foxshadow came bounding up to her.

"Sorrelfur!" he exclaimed. "I was so worried! Where were you?"

"Helping Crowfrost," Sorrelfur replied, trying to keep calm. "He was outnumbered."

"Is he okay now?"

"Yeah."

"Good," Foxshadow meowed, his gaze dark. Sorrelfur felt her heart sinking rapidly. Something happened.

"W-what happened?" She managed to ask.

"Everyone is horribly injured," he replied gravely. "We've already lost Alana, Suzie, and Rakada, and Stormy's got a broken wing."

Sorrelfur's heart instantly dropped to her paws at the mention of the deaths. She had never liked Suzie or Alana, but she never knew how much she would miss Rakada. She was such a kind pegasus... and Sorrelfur hardly said anything to her. How she regretted that now. Lowering her head, she sighed. "I'll go get that fresh-kill I killed earlier."

Foxshadow nodded solemnly. "Thank you; we'll need it."

Crowfrost offered to help, and Sorrelfur accepted, as it would make it easier and save more time. After depositing the fresh-kill on the pile, she headed off to the medicine den with Crowfrost to get her wounds tended to. By now, the moon was high in the sky, and Sorrelfur's pads ached. Curling up in her nest, she was asleep before she laid her head down, and drifted into a deep, but uneasy, sleep.
