The shed is here.... OMG NOW WHAT!

I have build mine out of pallets and left over wood from my brother in law. Mt windows were 5$ each from the thrift store and i spent another 5$ on some plywood at a yard sale. I know I will haev to pay for paint, and the hardware cloth for the vents but hopefully i can keep it under about $50 bucks. We shall see. Yours is looking great so far! Fun to watch your progress! I will post a link to my feed if I start one =)
Im impressed too that you have done most the work yourself. I don't know if I could do it without my husbands help.

You know you've got it bad when you dumpster dive for plywood that the roofers threw out and seriously consider whether the old wood is too rotten to use

Seriously though, $50 a sheet and they threw away 2 perfectly good sized pieces.

Why is hardware cloth so expensive? Even chicken wire is way more than I thought it would be.

I work at a landfill - and it is grounds for immediate dismissal to 'scavenge'... Can you imagine the elaborate deals I have to work out with some of our regular contractor customers to 'have some of the load fall off' before they cross the scale and it officially becomes 'trash'?!?!?!?!? One guy figured out how to have a couple of small empty plastic barrels 'fall off' and nearly hit my car...

Of course, as long as they were laying right there, it was just responsible for me to pick them up and put them in the back of my car - to drop off at the dumpster after work.. yeah.. that's what I was doing.....
But since I forgot.. I may as well make them into waterers - right?

But really - was ANY of this stuff so expensive before DIY became a word and HGTV was invented? Once we realized that we COULD do this stuff, it became big business.

Ok yall - I'm ready to start cutting holes in the walls and I'm REALLY nervous about this step. If anyone has picts of exactly how you framed in windows/pop doors I'd really, really appreciate it. I've done lots of reading and looked at the window and door that are in my barn's feed room (also an unfinished interior room like the coop) but if I screw this up, I don't know WHAT I'll do other than just fasten wire over the hole.

Here's some old picts of the windows that are going in. These are the 2 smaller ones and they will be turned on their sides (3 panes wide). One is going next to the door (north side) and I haven't decided where to put the other one yet. If it goes on the West wall - it'll let in a LOT of afternoon light = heat. BUT it'll make a 4-way cross ventilation. hum....

Here's one of the 2 larger ones (4 panes wide). These are going on the east and south walls - both shaded sides. One facing the house and one facing into the run - just over the pop door.

I'll be adding hinges to the top edge so they'll open outward with the window itself keeping rain from blowing in.
Are there any things that I should know? You know, those "Oh, and be sure to...." things that if I have to discover them myself are going to be a big hassle?
One more thing. Any opinions on window placement? Would it make any difference if they're centered in the walls or not??? For example - the one that is going in the south wall - (back of the shed). Should it be directly across from the door (installed against the left side) or in the center of the wall (looks prettiest). If it's off to the right side it will be across from the front window (which will be beside the door).
As usual - I'm WAY over thinking this. HELP!

The weather is nice today - I've looked at dozens and dozens of pictures - I've googled the DIY and HGTV how-to's - so today's the day!

By tonight the girls will either have access to a run (tomorrow morning) or I will have my one sheet of spare plywood covering the oh-so-wrong hole in the wall.

Picts to follow.

I don't know what these are called but I found a whole box of them. They were left over when the crew came out to put up the steel shell for the barn several years ago. They have hex heads, a regualr screw bottom, a small 'flange' around the head and a rubber 'gasket' under that. They work GREAT to secure hardware cloth instead of washers. And the price is right - free.
Anyone every use them? Know what they're called? Have any issues with them??

I don't know what those fastners are. I like the door and the screened side light, I bet it's helping a lot in this heat or maybe you have not had 107* days!! You'll need to add another latch closer to the bottom of the door, a very determined pred. can pry the door open enough to slip inside. If you don't want to fool with another lock you can use a spring loaded safety hook and eye--1.99 at TSC 2 1/2 inch size. I was looking at them this weekend.
