The Shelly and Kevin Thread

Pics
There was something else I did with my girls yesterday- I fed them worms! I just dug them up and they were all going crazy. Shelly could eat them all on her own, but Kevy needed a bit of help, so I tried to get her to eat some, but they kept getting taken and eaten by the polish. Until, I found a giant one, so I offered it to Kevin, and somehow, she got it to fit just perfectly in her beak, and she slurped it down! The face she made afterwards was priceless. She didn’t like it.:lau

Me trying to lure Kevy over with a worm:

Kevin woke up yesterday morning with a giant, hard crop, and it was unlike any crop that Kevin had ever had. It worried me that she was going to have a problem, but she spent all of yesterday drinking water and relaxing- I don’t think she even ate. This morning, she woke up with an empty crop, so she’s all better now. I’m really glad it wasn’t a problem, but I am curious about what the blockage was. Maybe that worm...

Shelly spent (most of) her day in the nest box. She laid early in the morning and spent hours, after that, just sitting on her nest. I really hope she goes broody. Maybe then I could get more polish...

Crooksie used to over-stuff herself sometimes. But nothing ever happened so I'd say It’s fine. If it won't be empty by tomorrow I suggest giving her some olive oil. Chickens love the colour of it;)

Wow, I haven’t updated this thread for a while. It’s been cold lately, so nothing really has been going on other than that I have trimmed the girlies beaks down for this week, Kevin needs to lay any day now, and I also have a picture and a short story to share.

Kevin has started squatting now, and today she will not stop yelling! I’m not sure when her first egg will be laid, but it should be any day now! I’m so excited, and I really hope she doesn’t have too much trouble when laying it. I will keep everyone posted though.

Now, to my picture. Shelly got up early the other day to make her nest in the nesting box. She had been in there a long time, but there was still no egg, and my polish girls were getting impatient, waiting for her. They all know not to mess with my Shelly while she’s in there, and usually they leave her alone, but Bubs didn’t get the memo.🤦‍♀️

Shelly was furious, and she made sure to not let Bubs take any of her precious eggs (laid by the other girls) to sit on. I’m sure Bubs probably just laid and hopped out, but my Shelly loves to sit on her eggs after they are laid, so she probably spent even more time hogging the nest box.

We only have one nest box at the moment, but we are planning on constructing a whole new setup that will have three nest boxes available to them. We have to wait until it gets warm though, to start.
