The Silver Laced Wyandotte Thread

Here is Nugget at 15 weeks. Not particularly visible on this picture is the green coming out in his tail, and a bit of green on his back as well.
Here's one of our SLW pullets. They're around 8-10 weeks old.

Anyone know where I can get some SQ SLW hatching eggs or anyone with SQ stock that is willing to ship chicks? Muy first batch are not hatchery stock, but they are not at all what I'm looking for. I would like to start over with my SLWs.

My next hopefuls. These are supposed to be SOP SLWs. They are also supposed to be pullets, but I'm thinking cockerel on the short winged one. I would LOVE it if one was a cockerel. Supposed to have come from Duane Urch, but I'm thinking he just helped the buyer find them.

Does anyone here put leg bands on their chickens? I would like to know which ones are my first year chickens and so on as they grow and breed and we allow the eggs to hatch. Is this something that can be done on chickens? Or do they peck at their legs if banded? And if you have banded your chickens how old were they when you did it?

Yes, lots of folks band their chickens and at any age. If you do when they're little you just have to be careful of them growing into them or out of them and having them get too tight.

I use zip ties on my chickens. If they're young when I put them on, I leave them rather loose so they can grow into them. Just make sure you cut off the excess tie so the chicken can't zip it tighter. I have several colors so I can band hens of the same breed and tell them apart. An added bonus is they are fairly cheap.

Chicks at this age can not be determined as SOP. if they come from good parentage , you are off to a goos start, but you will have quite a while before they grow out enough to determine either way. It will be interesting to see how accurate the sexing is.

I know that. Even bad birds come from sop parentage. It's the best shot I have right now though. ;-)
