yeah, I opened it and it had no yoke. The kids understood.
What exactly will a float test tell you about the eggs?

Gracious, that egg is tiny. I don't think that button quails just come from another breed of quail though.

Float tests tell you the age of an egg because the air sack develops over time and the older an egg the larger the egg sack. An old egg is more likely to float high up in the water, with a lot of the egg exposed, where as a fresh egg will sink, and an egg with a developed embryo inside will float but lower down so less of the egg is exposed.

It probably won't have a yolk, and even if it did would probably not be fertile, and even if by some miracle it was then the embryo would NOT be normal, it would either die in the shell LONG before hatch time or not develop at all, in all likelyhood. In any case, not really a great idea to put a little egg like that in an incubator.

this is what i found today..........my smallest egg.
im thinking its a nutrition deficit.
i have been feeding then starter crumbles with a 21% protein.
then i switched to laying mash with crush mielies.
and rice and whatever grains i could find in the kitchen cupboard.

That's cool. Was the bird young? When I got mine it was from a bird that had just started laying. It may have been the first egg she layed but not sure. What did you do with it? Was there anything in it? Mine had no yoke.

You're more likely to find no eggs than small eggs with a nutrition issue. How much protein is in the new feed? The 21% starter would have probably been fine to stick with, my quail layer pellets are 20% protein which I up with mealworms. If it's chicken layer mash then it won't be high enough, that will be nearer 15%

another mini egg from the same cage today ................a bigger mini egg.
at present i continue to feed them starter pellets.
i broke the mini egg, and yes it had a yolk....................


you can see that today's egg is a bigger mini..........hehe!! ....how ambigious!!

me thinks it will do a egg flip this morning.
