chickabator,
You are so right. This is a no choice situation for you. Please see your doctor, there are meds that can help. I also have metabolic syndrome, and I'm telling you that it can be done. Just be very careful, watch your diet and exercise. And please don't make the cure worse than the disease. I'm rooting for you.

my dr. tells me everytime I go you need to quit smoking. I tell her I know that but that is easier said than done. but now I have no choice. I am a heart attack waiting to happen or a stroke I have just got to do this this time . I quit once before for 3 years got mad and smoked didn't hurt anyone but myself. I know I can do this and I am going to do this. My mil is blessed she gets to use chantix. I can't afford that.

Strange as it may sound ... if you think you can or you think you can't ... you're right.

Learn to hate the smokes ... hate the smell ... hate the taste.

Get a soda bottle, fill it half way with water and put your butts in there. Carry it wih you everywhere. Open it and take a BIG smell every time you smoke. Gross? Yep. However you're puttin that inside you!

Some of the things that I did to quit. It helped.

Cravings only last about 10 minutes or so ... next time ya want one, wait 10 to 15 minutes before lighting up.

Make a time limit ... like, I will NOT have a cigarette until it has been 90 minutes from my last one! (Or whatever time works for the amount you smoke.) I used to smoke an average of 2 an hour and before I tossed em out I was down to 10 a day (I believe it was.)

My doc put me on Wellbutrin to help, and it did! For some it will, for some it wont ... ask your doc.

You are stronger than those little expensive sticks!

Peace!

Don

I know what your going thru, I had to quit in September, I have heart dsease. I had a heart attack in September, Im only 29. Dr told me if i wanted to live 10 more years Id stop smoking, right then. So I havent touched on since.
And Don is right "If you think you can, or you think you cant, youre right." Alot of smoking is habit. It was with me once I learned to do other things like after a meal or just when Id want a cigarette it was alot easier.

ill also be here for support on the first and im so proud of you all for doing this. my mom smokes and she wont quit. she doesnt wanna quit either. at the hospital instead of having a smoking area they now have a sign for people to sign to try to quit and my mom says she doesnt wanna quit and the worker says you dont have to you have insurance! here in houston practically everyone has medicaid!

chickabator,
It might take a lot of trying, took me about 10 years of talk and whining and trying etc. before I finally put them down. Excuse the little slap but if you can afford to buy cigarettes you can afford to buy chantix, wellbutrin, patches, gum or something. You & I don't have a choice. I really don't want to end up spending the last 20 years of my life a blind amputee tied to a bed in a nursing home. We can't afford to be sentimental about cigarettes. THEY ARE POISON! I wasn't diagnosed till about 3 years after quitting. since then I've lowered my LDLs to untestable levels, Kept my A1c at 6.0 or lower. triglycerides are very low and HDLs are in the good range. Also no damage yet to my Kidneys or Liver. Nerve damage aplenty, and I'm on a watch for my eyes. PM me if you need to. This is a subject that I feel strongly about. I have that "sword of Damocles" hanging above me. If you are not getting adequate health care see an endocrinologist. It'll still be cheaper than a funeral, and I'll bet your family and friends think so to. It may take a while, but YOU can do it.

Have just read all the new posts..what a tremendous bunch of "quitters" you all are...and the support from the non-smokers is fantastic......Thank you all so much!

I have made my ! qutting signs! for the house....."I am a quitter - please dont stress me out" and I am putting them up in the kitchen midnight tomorrow....just a reminder to my darling children that I am determined to stop.....and although it wont be easy I also need them to help! I think t is important that everyones family knows what you are trying to do and is supportive...particularly if there are other smokers in the house none in mine so I am lucky) and it would be easier if they did not smoke around you especially those first couple of weeks when the craving will get you.

I have also decided that we are not going to drink any wine with our evening meal......thats a big trigger for a cigarette especially for me... so I am going for the full on healthy option of just plain water!....have'nt told my DH of course his being Italian and loves that glass with his dinner.......but I do like that cigarette after a meal....so out goes the wine for the time being.......

I am doing this for me this time, in the past when I have tried to quit I have done so for other people and never for myself because I just love my cigs....this time I am really excited as it is just for me, and therefore makes me even more determined, as my DH said "You have to do it for you, and only you can do it"...he is so right..........

SO ONE DAY AND COUNTING - after today that is....BE STRONG - KEEP STRONG AND TOGETHER WE CAN ALL DO IT.......remember you are doing this for you...............and only you can do it......look forward to a fresh year, and a fresher you.......midnight tomorrow is the start of a better year for us all...whether "weaners or cold turkeys" .......and thats just the start...who knows what 2009 can bring......Energy and Persistance conquers all things...we can beat the cigs!!!!!!!!!!

Jump on board the quitting train............I love you guys xx
