(Yeah, I guess.)
Lila turned into the long drive to the house, walking quickly. She opened the door, and stepped into the hall.

"Okay, so I'll need you to grab that power coupling over there, and attach it to this cable." Mark said.
Calder, for once being something other than frustrating, obeyed.

Hearing footsteps, Alina turned and scurried up the ladder. She popped her head out and spotted Lila. "Hello," she said quietly, "Come on in!"

"Thanks. Now hand me that battery," Mark said, carefully attaching a jumble of wires together.

Lila climbed down the ladder. "It's a good thing that the step is solid, you can't tell that it's hollow. Whoever built this house thought of everything."

"Slave-driver," Calder teased, handing it to him. "What even is this?"

Alina laughed. "I know."
She moved aside a stack of boxes, revealing a door carefully hidden in the wallpaper. "There are two rooms through here. It's part of the basement," she explained. "I soundproofed it a while back for a project I had going on."

Inside the first room were the felted soundproofing panels. One wall was slightly scorched, right by where a workbench and bunsen burner stood. Alina flushed - "And as you can see, the project didn't quite work out,"

"It's a sort of portable X-ray machine. But it's not just for injuries. You can use it to scan buildings, to make sure that everything's safe inside. And I think that if I make a few adjustments to the central HDD circuit, that should inject the IP interface!" Mark said excitedly. "Meaning, of course, that it should be workable for up to 150 yards!"

"What was the project?" Lila asked curiously.

Calder sighed. "Alina would understand you. I, however, am sane enough to not have the foggiest idea what you're talking about."

Alina chuckled, then said, rather nostalgically, "I was analysing the flame colour caused by liquids containing a variable ratio of certain elements, and mixed up some liquid hydrogen into it. Have you heard of the Hindenburg disaster?"

Without waiting for a response, she continued, "That's what happens when hydrogen burns. I ought to have known."

Pushing the bunsen burner aside, she flipped a switch and red, green and blue LEDs came on, revealing a weird structure that appeared to be made of glorified PVC pipes.

Mark sighed, "It will be able to X-ray things that are up to 150 yards away."

"Oh," Lila paused, "So how many people do you think could fit in here?"

"Yeah, I get it. I just don't see the point. X-rays are for healing people," Calder reminded Mark, thinking of his own powers.

Alina shrugged. "The ventilation is okay, and it's roomy enough. There's electricity, I've had that installed. I wouldn't necessarily want this as a permanent hide-out... I was thinking more as a refuge in time of need."

She thought for a moment. "I don't think it'd be fair for more than four people to be in here for long periods of time. It'd get cramped."

"Okay, X-ray may not have been the best word choice." Mark scratched his head, "Maybe 'scanner' instead."

"Alright. That sounds good," Lila looked around the room.

Calder sighed. "I have no time for inventions unless they're to do with healing people," he said, "Though I can hurt if I choose to, too."

Alina nodded, leading her into the next room. "This is also soundproofed," she said, "And I think we could kit it out quite nicely. I don't mind knocking together some chairs and a table, I've plenty of scrap wood leftover from my contraptions."

Mark suddenly jumped up, "Oh no! Come on Mark. Shutting down the card won't do anything, you need to index the wireless Y2K application!" he said to himself, as he pulled out a couple of wires.

"Yeah, I see. If you set it in that corner then you could even have room for another bed in here," Lila told her.
