"Okay, so if we can attach the scanner in here," Mark pointed, "Then we could even have room for a pilot still. It would be better if we could make it controllable from a distance though," he added.
"Mm, I was wondering that," Alina said, fiddling with the joystick.

"Hey, Alina," Calder called, "Whilst you geniuses work on that, how about Lila and I clear out the rest of that hideout?"

Lila changed to look like Allen. She walked over to Calder and said, "I don't know where Lila went, so I guess she can't help clean."

"Well, you could," Calder said. Alina looked around and guessed what had happened, but didn't give Lila away. She turned back to Mark and asked, "Would you explain how the scanner works? Maybe we could increase its range somehow."

"Nah, I can't," Lila-as-Allen replied.

"Sure. Okay, so it works a bit like echolocation. Sends out waves which bounce back, creating a picture of what's out there. But a little like an X-ray too. So you get a full picture of whatever you're scanning, down to what's in pockets, and furniture and stuff," Mark explained.

Calder frowned, "Of course you could. I think you might be ill. An attack of feelus lazius I expect. I have the perfect cure."

"In other words, the beams have to be stronger somehow," Alina summarised.

"What's the cure?" Lila asked.

"Yes. Do you have any ideas?" Mark asked her curiously.

"Do it for two minutes. Guaranteed, it'll be more of a pain to stop than keep going once those minutes are up," Calder replied smugly.

Alina was staring at it in deep thought. "Mm... perhaps..." she murmured, then fell silent for a moment.
"Bats!" she suddenly exclaimed "That's it! Have you heard of aerial hawking bats?"

Lila grinned, and shrunk back down into herself.

"Yes. Don't they have some of the most powerful echolocation known?" Mark asked.

Calder's jaw dropped. "Oh right!" he exclaimed, in mock annoyance "You just wanted to make me look like an idiot!"

"Yeah. They vary two things - increasing signal directionality and intensity will increase the sonar range." Alina recalled. "I remember looking up echolocation in dolphins and getting sucked down a rabbit hole,"

"No, I just- oh, yeah. You're right," Lila responded.

"Okay. If I tweak the main reactor, and remove the H29 cord, it could do just that!" Mark exclaimed excitedly.
