Alina met Tara's eyes for a second before glancing away, but not before Tara would have been able to see timidity in her eyes.
"I reason," she said, her voice quiet, but somehow commanding attention from others, "that the Programmer will be looking for us in every quiet corner... if not him, perhaps others for him, and I think if we put ourselves in his shoes he wouldn't believe anyone would have the audacity to hide behind his back,"

Alina was by this point slipping into her own reverie, completely unaware that she was talking in riddles. Calder snapped her out of it, turning from Charlotte and cocking his head.
"We ordinary mortals can't speak that language," he said, with sarcasm metaphorically dripping from his words.
Alina flushed and fell silent.
Lila sat up, "Are you saying that we hide somewhere close to him, where he wouldn't think we would go?" she asked excitedly.

Lila sat up, "Are you saying that we hide somewhere close to him, where he wouldn't think we would go?" she asked excitedly.
Calder drawled; "It looks like we have two linguists here. I can't understand a word you're saying."
Alina allowed a slight smile to flicker across her face, and nodded, pushing a stray curl away from her face.

Lila paced back and forth, flickering between different forms, as she always did when thinking, "It's a good idea. Risky, but a good idea. Where could we go?"

Alina looked at her, her vivid blue eyes like deep pools brimming with ingenious ideas if only someone had gazed therein to read them. "How many rooms does the Programmer occupy in his palace?" she asked, innocently.

Calder swung around, realising what she had just said. "But you're crazy! Clearly your genius has turned you mad, Alina!"

She fixed him with an calm stare, and though the twitch about her lips betrayed the fact that she had a witty retort at the ready, she did not speak.

Lila was flickering faster and faster, until Mark laid a calming hand on her arm. She shot a grateful look at him, then said, "The palace has a nearly unoccupied level, underground. Mark?"
Mark nodded, and turning to a screen on the wall, he let his fingers fly over the keyboard. "Right here," he said, pointing to the blueprint that appeared on the screen.

Calder's mouth fell open. "But she's- she's bonkers! This is sheer madness!"

Again, a smile flickered briefly over Alina's pale face. She fingered her thick plait and spoke again. "Precisely what the Programmer would say if there is anyone foolish enough to suggest it to him," she pointed out.

"You're right. From what we know of the Programmer, we can tell that he trusts no one but himself. He would expect us to make the maybe more logical move of getting far away from him. If we instead get close, it could throw them off even more while we gather more recruits, and find a way to get off this island," Lila said.
