"Tara!" Alina called, but too late. She turned to Calder, anger in her vivid blue eyes. "Did you have to?" she snapped.
Calder was taken aback. He had never seen Alina angry before, and he'd known her for twelve of her sixteen years. He came further into the room, hurt by her glare.
"I'm sorry!" he said.
"That's not enough!" Alina said, frustratedly, "Can't you get this? Tara doesn't have a place—doesn't have anyone—how can you drive her out?"
"She's not the only one who doesn't have anyone," Calder replied, almost inaudibly. He turned away. Alina jumped up off the bed.
"I'm sorry—Calder, that was inconsiderate of me." she said, "I can guess how you must feel, but can't you please deal with it in some other way than being—being obnoxious?"

Calder's eyes darkened. "That's what you think of me?"
"No!" Alina denied, "Of course not. You were going to be my big brother, remember?" she pointed out, slipping a slim arm through his. "It's just... Tara's going through the same. And I can't help you. You haven't even let me try. But Tara might. So I ought to."

She pulled away from him and ran out of the room. "Tara?"
Tara was sitting on the bottom step of the stairs, she looked up as Alina appeared “I’m not trying to cause trouble I’m so sorry if I started something” Tara said she looked at Alina

"No," Alina said, "Calder just... well, I don't think he's managing his feelings very well. Whatever he says, don't take it without a generous pinch of salt. He's always been like this, but noticeably more since—since Michaela died.

She looked at her feet “but I made everything ten times worse, like Calder obviously dislikes me and I feel really bad that I’m crashing in his fiancée’s room” she said

Alina thought a moment. "I would be very surprised if he dislikes you as a person," she revealed, "That's not the way he is. I think you'll find he's more... jealous. The way he looked at you earlier made me think... well, I could be wrong. But still. I mean, you could share my room if it were that big an issue. And I think he'll be fine."

“Jealous? What does he have to be jealous of? I’m literally an orphan and I lived on the streets for weeks and now I’m crashing here. It’s okay I can stay in her room if that’s okay with you. And what way did he look at me? What did it make you think?” She quizzed Alina

"Whoa, whoa," Alina laughed, "One at a time. One, I think my Dad really likes the idea of you being here. It's been far too quiet for him and he's really taken to you. I don't think Calder likes that idea. He—I guess he feels like you're taking Michaela's place. But that's not true. You're a guest, and from my perspective, and Dad's too, a welcome one."

She paused for breath, and Chris, having heard his name, joined them. "Room for three?" he asked, perching on the stairs with them.

Tara laughed “I wouldn’t never try to take Michaela’s place, she’s your sister. To be honest I was reluctant to stay here at first because of my pride but once I realised I couldn’t go on like I was I gave up and agreed with Mark that I should stay. And I’m glad I did, your dad and you are such great people, as for Calder he surely must know I’m not your sister and I’m never going to be”

"It was Mark's idea? I didn't know that. But I'm glad he persuaded you, all the same," Alina told her, "And yeah. I think Calder just needs to get used to the idea. He's—well, posessive to say the least."

“Yeah I didn’t want to, I was going to crash at HQ but he persuaded me. Yeah, do you think I should go talk to Calder?” She asked looking back up the stairs to see if he was there
