No panic here just prepared so I don't have to go out...these drivers around here can't drive on snow and in my 4x4 or not I don't like playing Dodge Car. My chickens already have some frostbite and my eggs are freezing so may as well add several inch's of snow to it as well(I'm in the higher amount range for Mid TN) We will dig out this weekend..no brine trucks or plows for our back roads just steep hills with 45 degree curves...weee and in some places if you fail to stop or make the corner the River is waiting for you.I'm right on the Cumberland.
We also have a wood furnace that is only used in emergencies or very cold since it heats us out of the house but it's been on for over a week.We haven't been above freezing yet this year.First time in 7 years it's even been turned on.
What to do about the chickens if the power goes out..nothing for the adults but I have outside brooders with heat lamps on all the time now.Our chicken shed is fully hooked up to a back up generator just for such occasions of an idiot hitting a pole or transformer in a storm. I'm waiting to start the bator up until after it blows thru..due here late tonight.
Global Warming got to love it
I have had snow since before Christmas.Getting 3 to 6 inches right now on top of that. Girls have frosbite on combs even with red warming light. Just collected a frozen egg. Our temps are dropping to - 13 will be our lowest...We ( me and the girls) cant wait for Spring! My wood stove has been constant for weeks! I cut wood in the snow last Sunday. BUt I aint afraid of loosing power..knock on wood!
Just got back from Kroger. It was a circus...senior day PLUS "snow's a comin' panic day". It was fun!
Really! Most people seemed excited and in a good mood! Our temps are actually a tiny bit higher with the snow coming. Like Buehler, we have a backup generator. It's hardwired to the house and comes on automatically when/if power goes out. So my wussie little girls can still have a heat lamp if needed....lol. I'm kind of looking forward to the snow, since it's been do danged cold anyway
Snap!!! I have day old chicks! Glad you posted that! I'm going to walmart to buy one of those battery backup power strips for a computer. Hopefully, if it can run a computer for eight hours, it can power a 100 watt light bulb to keep the babies warm!
Our snow and ice is supposed to hit tomorrow afternoon.
Word to the wise- I bought one of those plug in converters for the car. It has 2 plugs and a USB port. 1st time I tried to use it (power outage during incubation) it fried the converter and blew the fuse in my jeep
