The Sullivan Six

Went out to put Apollo in the coop tonight, only to find the run completely empty! "Surely she couldn't have gotten out of the run!" I thought to myself as I start lowkey panicking. I went into the coop to see if maybe one of the kids had put her in the crate. Empty! Looked a little closer, and there she is! Lose in the coop, under the poop board.

Apollo continues to refuse confinement. I had her out for supervised interactions this morning and that went well.

They all dogpiled her when she went over to the corner they were hanging out, but mostly ignored her after that. I put her back in her pen after about an hour or so.

This afternoon I had to run by the pharmacy and I was telling my coworker who's been off most of the week about the adventures of Apollo. I got home and started prepping dinner and the 12yo came into the house to tell me Apollo was out again.

We went out and found where she went under the fence (my fault this time, I rolled a log away from the fence to sit on this morning during her supervised time and forgot to roll it back...it was covering a roughly chicken sized hole at the bottom that rusted out). Stayed out there and observed for a while and everyone was behaving themselves. So I decided to leave her to it. I'm spying on them from the kitchen window, and there's been many one or two brief chases, but for the most part they're ignoring her.

I have 3 water stations out there right now, several large logs, the lean-to shelter I cobbled together that's open on both ends, and the plastic brooder tote laid on its side. I've only got two feeders, one inside the coop and a milk jug feeder in Apollo's pen, plus a trough that had mash in it this morning (they've eaten all of that). I think I'll put her in the crate in the coop for overnights, since the pop door doesn't open until 7am for the neighbors' sakes (Amalthea is  loud!). But I think she'll be ok to be loose with the flock during the day.

Apollo seems to have made friends with Limu. She's also apparently allowed to peck Limu and Limu backs down. Marcille also seems to be dominated by Apollo, she actively avoids her.

Artemis, Paprika, and Lady Amalthea on the other hand still have something to prove, so she (mostly) avoids them. But so far nothing too bad, just a little feather pulling from the top girls

These two in the background waiting for Artemis to decide if she's gonna let Apollo look at her like that 😆

Apollo seems to be settling in with the flock pretty well. She still runs from Paprika and Amalthea, but as long as she's not where they want to be or directly challenging them they seem content to let her be. Artemis still seems to think she has something to prove, but she seems to be able to tolerate Apollo a bit better too. She seems to be friendly with Limu. And Marcille is definitely deferring to her, though she no longer feels the need to chase Marcille.

Apollo is very disappointed with me for not bringing treats tonight.

Speaking of Marcille, I'm really hoping she's going through a molt. Otherwise the pecking order disputes must be much more intense when I'm not looking. There are feathers everywhere in my run right now! Poor girl's looking a little rough.

And an Artemis picture because she was feeling left out. I think she's probably molting too, there's a fair few black and white feathers strewn about the run.

My barred rock started molting last week and honestly I don't blame her, I'd also want that mass of feathers off at this time of year! 🤣

:love Artemis!
