What are you keeping her in to keep her feathers on her feet long?
nothing special. She is in the coop with pine shavings at night, and outside on grass and dirt during the day.
Congratulations on your Sultans! We'd love to see pictures! Did you get colored Sultans? As I understand it they only come in white and some people are breeding black/blue? Or are you talking about their down colorHi sultan lovers!
I, too, got a sultan in my batch of Polish. It was given to me free because I didn't want to leave it alone and neither did the feed store. My Raja sounds just like Nugget! Such a scardy bird, always off by herself and kind of in her own world. She has the funny little gait/hop/trot thing going on, too. She is really a gorgeous bird! Her feathers are very silky and shiny, distinctly different than my polish! She never catches on when I bring out treats or nibbles for them to nom on during the day. Very silly little thing, so I hope she matures and chills a bit.
Since I got her on accident, I decided to pick up some friends of her own kind. I have 3 baby sultans feathering out in the brooder right now so that she has company. Those three don't exactly like me much, either. They calm nicely when I hold them, though! Hoping they turn out a little more calm and friendly. When I picked them out from the batch, I chose two silver/white ones and one fluffy yellow. All have excellent feathering on their legs, and my Raja is very good looking for hatchery stock! I keep getting told they are weak birds, and have read that they are pretty sensitive. Hoping mine make it through this winter, and if they do, I may pick them up as a breeding project.

Oh they are getting absolutely beautiful!
Mine get broken feathers on their feet as well and they live in a deep pile of shavings! I suspect that their feet are why they don't want to roost on the bar?Ok b/c the ground is hard here where I live and its hard to keep them from breaking.

Sounds so cute!
Mine are really chilling out now, almost all of them let me pet them and they're getting better at trying new foods too. I've been giving them grass, but not until recently, have they been eating that I can tell. One girl must still not be eating the grass because her egg yolks are still quite light yellow, whereas everyone else has dark yellow yolks now. Of course, I have no idea which bird lays which egg...? But they never really ate any snacks that I had offered up before, including mealworms! They seem to be getting more relaxed and adventurous since they've begun to lay. I have no idea if that has anything to do with it?? But???

Yay, ty! Now that I finished the larger run on their coop I should be able to get real nice pictures of them! It was a scramble to get it completely netted in to prevent hawks.Congratulations on your Sultans! We'd love to see pictures! Did you get colored Sultans? lol, yah, they're silly little things! It's funny, when I read about them, they were supposed to be so calm and friendly, etc... and they seemed 100 percent different. But honestly, they're definitely coming around, except Charlie. Charlie, my boy, still flaps his wings madly when I pick him up and madly tries to climb up me (I think to get to the highest point, my head?) and it takes a while for me to calm him down and get him to stay on my lap! Once I'm sitting somewhere, like in front of the TV, and have forced him to stay on my lap (and not climb me like a tree) then he finally will settle down and even fall asleep. He loves to cuddle at that point, getting stroked and sits there half open eyes, half asleep, LOL.
