Ideal poultry has sultan bantams. They don't have a minimum order but they send extra male chicks in the box to keep the chicks warm. Their shipping is very cheap compared to other companies.

Well, I decided not to order from there as the Sultans weren't sexed and I didn't want to have to order 4 to get the one hen we needed. Today though I noticed Sultans pop back into stock on the My Pet Chicken site, so I coerced my neighbor to split an order with me (as we need to order 8 for a delivery to our area) and we have a Sultan coming our way in April. I just seriously hope she makes it alive and well this time. I was tempted to order 2 just in case but we are really trying to have all different birds in our flock, so I will just cross my fingers she finds her way here safely.

Well my 2 sultans are exactly 2 months old. Any idea if they are a roo or hen? The first 2 pics are "Salty" and the last two pics are "Manning".

I really like the look of these birds. I have been slowly trying to learn a bit more about them, a couple other threads asked about colours and it seems there is in the USA 2 (black and blue) other colours found pictures of actual birds, but I also found art from indicating they may have have come in more colours at one time. The explantation on a Sultan site is it is assumed Sultans where crossed with Polish at some previous time, maybe but maybe not as any other colour could have easily been bred out, because of show preference or simply the other colours where not imported. Anyhow it appears there are a few folks trying to preserve the other 2 colours, for biodiversity in the genetics I am hoping more folks do as well. Supposably at one time this bird was a meat bird too (breast meat is suppose to be very good.)

I wonder why such an extremely low egg laying rate, and how closely related they all are? Any specific genetic issues with this breed?

Hi everyone! I just got a sultan (I'm pretty sure. Right? haha) in my "rare breed" pullet assortment yesterday. SO excited about her! She is the feistiest and littlest chick in the cage right now. Just hatched 4/7 and has so much personality already. She also has 11 toes! I'm sure that's a deformity/breed fault, but I generally love anything with a little quirk. Since I'm not breeding, it doesn't bother me at all.
