the sultan thread

I finally sorted through my hatchery chicks. All the ones who look like roosters and ones who are missing nails are going to the animal auction tonight. I have 4 out of 10 I'll be keeping.

Yesterday seen two new sultan chicks hatched. Both look good, no deformities (thankfully) and they appear to have their toenails.

I've started setting my eggs every few days so I'll get more hatches at one time. The girls are laying pretty good and it takes only a couple days to get a dozen eggs to set. I'm still struggling with late DIS on some, so there's never actually 100% hatch rate. Hoping the new roosters will help on that issue. They are topping the hens, but one hen is being a little cow to them and fighting.

Hope everyone's sultans are doing well!!

This is a good image to show skull vaults. Starting on the left, that's a 2 day old chick which does have a skull vault hidden in it's fluff. In the middle is a chick which came from a hatchery hen (Mielikki) and has a very minor vault, nearly unnoticeable. The chick on the right is out of my older sultans or Flossy (which I suspect) and has a very high vault.

The unseen chick is also out of Mielikki and has a minor vault. 2 more are in the hatcher with vaults but are not as high as the chick on the right. They are somewhere in the middle of the two newborns on vault size.

Today was a good day. 5 out of 8 sultan eggs have hatched.

As a side note about my deformed sultan chick which died in shell. A friend breeds buff orpingtons and she had a chick exactly like mine. It was missing a eye and had a cross beak. So maybe it's a spontaneous thing and not a completely inbred, limited bloodline thing.

All 3 of my Meyer hatchery Sultans are missing the one toenail.

So are the Ideal hatchery. They probably all got stock from each other. But I'm working on ones with toenails, I culled (sold) my chicks without toenails and seem to be hatching chicks now with nails mostly. It will still be at least 3 weeks before I see what the new, with toenails, roosters produce with my girls.

I'm getting a lot of eggs, not sure if anyone is interested in hatching out any. I hate the idea of destroying the eggs when they could have beautiful sultan chicks in them :) I have about 40 in the incubator and 20 getting loaded in today. No idea what I'll do with that many chicks!!

I hatched out 10 chicks over the weekend. One is a pale grey, it looks dirty haha. Never seen a sultan that color, all my others are yellow.

Oh wow, how absolutely adorable they are!

The black one looks like a white crested polish mix. It will be interesting to watch those grow up. Are they from your own chickens?

Here's my brooder of babies. My grey is lighter than yours and it's towards the back. Of course my camera batteries died and I couldn't use a flash :S
