the sultan thread

Yellowherb,
by the way, had to go back and change my last post, I was calling her Puff, her name is Powder, Puff is the silkie I got her with....duh

You had me laughing just picturing the head bob and running crouched down....

Here is a picture of her sunbathing with the suspect roo that maybe the father to my new chick....

So if these two mated what would I get?

16 paws, I just assumed her full name was Powder Puff lol. Flossy is really Flossy Mae, but I shorten it to just Flossy or when talking to her "floss". She gets it. It's amazing to me that they know their names and come like a dog when called.

Your girl looks like a pretty good size, unless the other chickens around are bantams.
As for what you get, unknown. using a sultan hen and a mille fleur rooster, I got 2 different colored chicks. But since you have a hen, I did notice that chicks look best when coming from sultan hens rather than a non sultan hen. They are much more sultan like, but the head bump isn't really large.

I have some silkie mixes that are stunning and have head bumps. My neighbor has a white silkie roo over a multitude of different hens and they make some beautiful babies and fat, fluffy hens. Most with 5 toes and head bumps. So I have some of his chicks which I'm growing out for the sultan project. Right now though I'm just happy to hatch a sultan baby with all it's toenails.

My two new boys, named Alpha and Bravo (so original), are mixing in with the flock. With the old rooster too, who will leave on Saturday with the young rooster and go to my Dad's house. There was very little fighting. But now the poor young guy can't even get close to a hen, all 3 adult Roo's go knock him off. I was worried about the older rooster going since I had not seen the two new ones mate, finally I seen Bravo top a hen yesterday evening. Strange to me it wasn't Alpha, Bravo isn't even crowing and he's not that young.

In the end only two of my sultan eggs hatched. The incubator is Stik running but I expect I'll **** it off when I am home from work.
The two sultans are hanging out with a vorverk hatch mate and two light Sussex week old chicks. One of the sultans seems to have imprinted on one of the LS.
One sultan is allot fluffier than the other, has the puffy cute cheeks and has down on all of it's toes, the other has legs like my silkies, just the outer toes are feathered.

I thought I would post an update on my pair of sultans. I moved them into my outside brooder which is in my greenhouse. I have another group of chicks 3-5 weeks older in the greenhouse. A week ago I then moved the little chicks out of the brooder and in with the older chicks. They are very clearly two seperate flocks but they are managing were well. I was worried about the sultans as they seemed to take the majority of the aggression when they where mixed and I know they are less tough than most because of their vaulted skulls. The vorwerk they hatched with as well as one of the two older light Sussex they brooded with are cockerels, and both very defensive of their group. I have seen the sultans being pecked by some older silkies and the little vorwerk did a flying kick from across the greenhouse to knock a silkie out the way and they all ran off for cover. The light Sussex I have seen chasing birds well over twice his size away from their food, pecking and squawking at them. So I am now very happy they are not being bullied and are well looked after and established. Yesterday, I finished the run behind the greenhouse and this morning all of the older chicks where outside in the run, the younger group took the opportunity to explore the whole greenhouse although I am yet to see them outside. This is probably way to early to sex them but it does seem they have very different crests, so perhaps I have one of each.

They are just so beautiful. My hatchery chicks are about the same age as your two. Some I think I can sex, their nostril area is pinking up more than others and they are most likely males.

Your chick that I can clearly see, looks to be female-for now haha. Too hard to sex sultans until you can see hackles.

I love to have sultan chicks raised with other chicks, it helps them out in so many ways. Although my sultan chicks are less skittish of me than the other types, they are generally (at first) the last to leave the brooder area which is my garden shed. But it seems having the other types of chicks which do explore far and wide helps the sultans to also explore farther than they would on their own. I have one, who I think is a little rooster, which is buddies with a large fowl light brahma pullet chick. She's far larger than he is, but they come up on the deck together to see me and get some meal worms. I so want to keep this little friendly guy but he's missing a toenail :(

My older chicks, which has no sultans but are silkie mixes mostly, take one side of the yard and the younger chicks which includes sultans take the other side of the back yard. It's most definitely two different flocks. It's time, past time, for the sultans to leave the brooder shed and go with the older chicks but it's hard because I know the older ones will pick on them and I'm pretty sure I do not have any small males with them, but my older chicks do have two young males who are aggressive. So on Saturday I think they will go to the animal auction along with sultans who I know are rooster chicks and any who are missing toenails. I'll be down to very few sultan chicks then. After that, the remaining sultan chicks and others who are feathered out will move into the pen with the older female chicks.

I have 5 sultan eggs pipped in the hatcher. Looking forward to seeing if I get purebreds or mixes maybe later today :D Crossing my fingers they have all their toenails!

Are yours bantams @RonoKT ? I cant remember. Their eyes look larger than my birds do, makes me think bantam.

My sultans are very hard to get a good lok at, since they went into the greenhouse floor area, I don't get much opportunity to inspect them, I am trying to handle them at every opportunity, but they are not calm when held, so I can't take a good look at the face and comb. They should be large fowl, eBay eggs though, so who really knows! They do spend more time than other chicks shouting about things that worry them, but it does seem that their brood mates make them more tough and normal chickeny. It's very cute to see them trying to get under the light sussex that is only 2 weeks older than them!
Good luck on your hatch!

2 hatched so far. Both are white but not pure sultans, no head bump. That darned Mille roo. I should stop getting mixed eggs soon since he's been gone for just over a week and was penned up before he left. I put 24 eggs in the incubator 2 days ago and I think those will be the last of the mixed breed possibilities. 3 more eggs to go, hopefully some of those will be pure.

Here's some new pictures.
The two new roosters, Alpha and Bravo. Alpha is in the back and Bravo in the front. Bravo is my first choice in rooster. Alpha will eventually go with the non sultan pullets for the sultan color project. He has a black spot on the back of his neck which you can't see in the pictures. They came from a livestock auction so they are not in the best feather form right now. I think they have nice crests though and I'm happy with their combs. Their feet look bare but I've checked and it's broken feathers, most likely from being caged.

One of the hatchery chicks out roaming

Hatchery chicks are the large sultans. Polish chicks, bought at tractor supply (bantams), my sultan chicks from my own hens are the small whites.

The patterned chick near the food bowl is a Sultan x mille mix. Also the one next to it is a sultan mille mix. Pure sultan chick in the background.

I keep adding new chicks to this group so hopefully they will not separate into two flocks.
