the sultan thread

Oh wow, those are some big feet feathers! Loving the hairdo on the Polish(?). Beautiful babies.

No standard as such on Sultans, they show in the all other breed class at shows I think. But the polish breeders club has more info on them.
*edit* Eye color in chicks looks a bit green, but it changes to a amber yellow color as adults. At least it does in my large sultans. Gives them a evil look under all that head fluff and with those bright red devil horns as a comb on roosters.

I take excess chicks to a animal auction if I can't sell them locally. It's amazing how even there the auctioneer thinks they are polish mixes. He went to sell a cage of chicks and called them white Polish. My daughter stood up and shouted at him "THEY ARE SULTANS". He replied back, but they have polish in them don't they? She shouts back NO! THEY ARE SULTANS!. He also sold a rooster cochin bantam as a hen..but oh well. Just a funny story about how little people know about Sultans.

During the genetics trip to high school, a friend of hers stops her with the sultan hen and asks if it's a duck. She told him it's a chicken. He replied, "I'm a Mexican and I know chickens. That's not a chicken." lol

Too funny! My mutt chicken wasn't in the picture. My cat actually stole a week old chick from elsewhere and brought it home. It sure beats dead lizards! We attempted to located the rightful owner to which one man who spoke little English said, "No, not mine." As he laughed. "That's your chicken" as he handed it back to me. So now we are chicken people! Lol. My husband and I headed over to the feed store and picked out a couple of buddies to keep "Nugget" the barnyard mutt chicken company. She could care less about them. My husband can't believe how ridiculous my little Polish and Sultan Bantams look. I love how crazy they look! We bought two cute fuzzy chicks and each week we are amazed by how much they change. Fingers crossed none start to crow. This was all of them a week ago.

Hello! I got this little sweet heart today. The lady I got her from thought it was a silkie mix because it has five toes, I told her there were more breeds than than with 5 toes but anyways.. I'm pretty sure it's a sultan, they didn't want it because it wasn't what they were thinking it'd be. I was wondering if anyone could tell if it's a hen or roo? I'm in love with this sweet little bird already

I'm so sorry to say I think it's a roo. BUT, some hens can get a big comb too and make you wonder.

This is my pullet Meilikki. I know she's a girl because she lays eggs and acts like a girl, but see how her comb is over grown.

How old is your young Sultan?

@Agarrard That is a beautiful picture!! And of course the chicks are so cute.

I'm not sure the age, I'm guessing around 6 weeks. I'm hoping it's a hen but love it either way, it has the sweetest personality. I was buying a golden laced Wyandotte and the lady showed me this one too. I got both haha, couldn't pass up this beauty.

Sultans are awesome chickens. I think even the roosters make great pets. Mine seem to go thru a shy stage where I'm a monster or something and then suddenly they come out of it and just love to be with me and have me talk to them. They also learn their names quickly and older/aggressive roosters can be taught to not spur (as much). I've never had a rooster which could be regressed back to not being so obnoxious. But my current Roo, Bravo, he's backing down and hasn't gone after me in several days.

I'm killing him with LOVE :) He goes after me, I pick him up and cuddle him and preen him etc. Boy does he hate that!! So now if he comes my way I just bend over and say Want some LOVE and he backs off and runs back to the hens.

I have 10 chicks hatched and more coming, at least 10 more. These are the first full chicks from the new roosters Alpha and Bravo, although now it's just Bravo since Alpha was too aggressive. But the chicks are amazing looking! Big poofy heads, all their toenails. I think I have my future breeding stock in the brooder :)

Little dark oddball. Most grey chick I've had born.

lol I totally love the dandelion fluff stage. Not sure if that's a weed running around the yard or a chick.

They are looking beautiful!!
