The Supreme Court's Gun Ruling This Week - Not A Debate

It has taken me a few hours to read all the posts, I have several points to make so bear with me.

I have been reading The Federalists Papers, as someone else has said, one of the reasons that the 2nd amendment was written in the first place was they didn't want the government of their new country to be able to control the people as the king in England did.

As to malitias, they were meant to defend their community. It was mandated that EVERY house had a weapon that was kept in good condition, it was known how to use it, and you had at least 200 rounds of ammo. That way if someone was threatening the community, it could be defended.

Ammo is already being priced out of range of many gun owners. DH reloads some of our ammo and is almost ready to reload all of it.

DH printed out the whole Supreme Court ruling. Some of the dessenting judges(I would have to look through it to find out the names) actually stated that our constitution needs to be changed!!! If you change one part; why not change more????

You CAN get a CCW in CA. It just depends on what county and what sherriff. We lived in ventura co. which is one of the hardest to get one, we moved to kern co. which is one of the easiest. DH is in the process of getting his, then I will start.

You CAN'T get a CCW without training!!

I have the murder rate stats in strict gun law states, but do not have them at hand. I will look them up and post them. It is really unbelievable numbers. As well as the numbers of ALL crime in right to carry states as opposed to others.

One thing that a lot of people get confused on; You hear many candidates talk about our constitutional rights to hunt. The 2nd amendment has nothing to do with hunting!!
Many candidates talk about their support of hunters while at the same time trying to pass laws that raise the price of ammo so high that people can't afford to hunt. In CA, in the condor range(which we live in) they outlawed lead ammo(all the studies though show that lead ammo has nothing to do with condor deaths). DH was paying $16.00 for 20 rounds 150grains soft nose; NOW he pays $45.00 for 20 rounds 165 grain lead free. We have seen the lead free as high as $85.00 for 10 rounds!!

We have hand guns for defense and target and match shooting, we also have shotguns for defense and target, we have rifles for target, defense and hunting. We have a .50 cal we use for matches. I don't understand when people say guns that have no practicle use. All of ours have practicle uses.

DH started teaching our oldest granddaughter to shoot when she was 5. Now at almost 10, she is a good shot and is almost ready to compete in matches with us. We have taught her the respect and proper use, care and reasons of guns.

Great civil disscussion!!

No closing our border to Mexico wont solve *all* of our drug problems..but its a darn good place to start. The majority of the meth that comes into our country these days comes in through Mexico. Many of the ppl who were cooking meth in the US before the ingredients got so hard to get their hands on are now cooking it in Mexico. They are both americans and mexicans.

Not doubting that may be true in SW USA but in Indiana, it's readily available locally produced........in this case made in USA is not a good thing.

I doubt that anyone would draw a gun on someone with a gun. For robbers, knowing that the people are likely armed themselfs is a good deterrent in itself.

There have been several fast food robberies in my state over the last few years where the workers were herded into the walk in freezer and excuted in order to leave no witnesses to the robbery. I know of several fast food restraunt managers who now keep a loaded weapon in their walk in freezer. They figure if someone is herding them into a freezer at least they will have a fighting chance.

Well i cant speak for you but i suspect that most of us with guns that know how to use them could indeed hit the target they were drawing on. Its not like in the movies where they fire an automatic weapon at someone 5 feet away and miss with all 20 shots fired sigh. I can hit a coyote running across my pasture without hitting my dog whose chasing it.. im pretty sure i could hit a human intent on hurting one of my family members without hitting my family member.

Now that is the most scary thing I have read so far. It is not the Supreme courts
job to change the constitution. That would cause a revolution and I believe the
majority of police and military would support the people.

Isn't it true that only Congress can ammend, not change the constitution? I realize
the dessenting members weren't trying to change it but just voicing that opinion
says enough about them.

Thats too bad. Oklahoma was one of the first states to require that cold products be moved behind the pharmacy counters and that products like strong iodine require a drivers license to purchase and there are records kept so that a lot of purchases by the same person pops up in a database. I was under the impression that most states had followed suit in the last couple of years.

All of the ppl that were manufacturing with my son are in mexico now, or in prison, or relatively clean. There are none from the ones he ran with here that are still cooking...just a lot that are still trafficing. Meth is easy to make..so im sure there are still kids playing around with it in Oklahoma...but nothing like it used to be. The vast majority of whats being sold here is no longer being made here because the ingredients are hard to come by and the product itself is not...means no reason for them to cook..they just sell. The politicians and media would have you believe that theres less of it on the streets now cause they are busting fewer meth labs all the time..but its not so.

Actually E is pretty much replacing meth as the teenagers drug of choice because its cheap and easily concealed. I actually had a mother say to me the other day.. at least its *only* E. I was like..what?? What do you think E *is*??

This topic hits home tonight because i just learned today that a friend who had been clean for almost 10 years is back shooting up meth again sigh.

Surprised this hasn't hit newspapers or national news if it's happened several times. Especially since it's an epidemic in your area.

I can hit a coyote running across my pasture without hitting my dog whose chasing it

There is a huge difference between this w/rifle. (I can do that and I conside myself a terrible shot) Now get a handgun and hit the coyote....want to make it a challenge, let's allow someone to defend him w/gun to shoot at you. Can you hit him now or are you going to be firing in general area?

Don't paint me as anti-gun but if you want to paint me as someone that doesn't want guns around my kids, OK, paint away........

I dont know what the answer is either..and believe me ive searched long and hard for it sigh. It often surprises ppl that as the parent of a drug addict i believe that drugs should be decriminalized. Just as youve said above.. nothing stops an addict from being an addict. At least decriminalizing them would lessen the violence, and big money, associated with them. Ppl who are going to chose drugs are going to chose drugs and its bad enough that they often kill themselfs in the process..whats the point in making it worse with the violence that often takes innocents with them? Then end of prohibition took the violence out of alcohol. Prohibiting it didnt stop ppl from drinking or becoming alcoholics..it just added violence to the equation by adding money to it.

I'm with you on this. Addiction is a disease, not a crime. Putting an addict in prison
usually makes him a criminal. There are no easy answers. Drugs destroy too many
lives. Most drugs such as alchohol, pot, maybe even cocaine can be moderated or
recovered from. Once someone touches meth or heroin their lives are changed forever.
I'm really sorry about your son. Some people have risen from the ashes so there
is hope.

Its always in the news when it happens. And i dont believe its any more common in my area than other areas.

Umm.. i wouldnt be using a handgun to fire at something so far away or at a human running away from me. Its a lot easier to hit a slow moving target from a few feet away than it is to hit a fast moving target a long ways away. You think a robber is going to try to rob you from 20 feet? Or someone try to carjack you from 20 feet? And as i said before..if they have their gun drawn already only and idiot would draw theirs. Using a handgun in these situations would be more like shooting the coon after my chickens..a lot easier than hitting a coyote.

Your welcome to feel anyway that you chose. If someone pulled a gun in a restraunt because they were angry at their gf behind the counter.. id be praying that someone with a handgun be there to defend my son whose likely to also be behind the counter. Assuming hes not already armed himself when he heard the commotion. Better that than to be slaughtered defenselessly like a lamb led to slaughter.

Boy isnt this the truth. The first time my son was picked up on a simple possession charge he was put in a pod with other drug offenders. How stupid is that to put them all together? He came out of jail with way more connections than he went in with! Duh!

This is so true. It isnt just the addiction, which is bad enough, but it changes the chemistry of their brain. It short circuits the pleasure centers and what brings pleasure to most of us.. makes the meth addict, even after years, feel nothing. Only meth brings real pleasure sigh.

And yes as long as hes alive theres always hope. Im thrilled that hes not back selling. Its a life thats very tempting to him because the money is easy and the drugs are easy. And working 50 hour weeks at minimum wage. Living in a dump cause its all he can afford. And having to take the bus because of his seizures. Well they make that old life really tempting i know. But so far hes done good there. And hes fighting his addiction hard and that takes a lot of courage. Im proud of him. He still slips from time to time, but each time he makes it a bit longer and comes back even more determined to stay clean. Time will tell.
