The Sussex thread!

Are eggs that have been sitting on our counter for about a week okay to hatch? House temperature is 70-72 during the day and 65-68 at night.
Put them in the 'bator. You have nothing to lose. Here's hoping for a surprising success in 3 weeks!
Best,
Karen

Try it !

I have a miricle roo ... he was an egg from my favorite hen and I gave some fertile eggs to a friend - whose circumstances dictated that she had them just sitting out on the counter for weeks and was going to toss them - then I had a barn fire and my fav hen with the others was killed. (why I have no electric in my new coop - the fire guys suspect it was a chewed electric wire - **** squirrels)

My friend fired up her bater ... in the 21 days - the temp spiked or dropped in the machine - yet the egg hatched !!!!! So I have her son, nearly a year old now.

even an egg in the frig - as I have heard that gets you a higher percentage of hens - but you will have a lower hatch rate ....

So basically - give it a whirl ! :)

I have one Buff sussex.
Can anyone tell me the following (as I'm finding it quite hard to find a decent amount of info on them);

When do they start laying?
Does their comb and wattles flush slightly more red like some other breeds when they're near POL?
Are they good layers?
How easily do they go broody?

Her name is Francis and she's the smallest of my mixed hens. She's dainty and quiet and I love her to bits :)

there is a british Sussex Poultry Club with a fine history. Created in 1903. They put out a yearbook. lots of good info there. You can find out how to join by checking out th Poutry Club website and look under :Sussex"f or the secretary's name. Pat Gage.
Also there are a bunch of wonderful lit on Sussex online. Surf on over to www.archive.org and look up Sharpe book on "Sussex Fowl". Hew as a Englishman who created he Light Sussex and legendary in he breed. This book is a classic.
