The Sussex thread!

I need some help with this little fella, I believe he is a rooster due to his little red comb and wattles. He is about 7 weeks old but someone told me that he might be a hen because they develop red combs faster than other breeds? I've never had a sussex before so I found this thread and figured I would ask the pro's!

I have two GLW. One is friendly-ish and pretty smart, the other thinks I'm a big scary monster. The two salmon faverolles the same...terrified of me if I get too close. My two buffs are friendly and bossy but not terribly bright. The speckled sussex leave them in the dust, lol. Smart but not bossy. When they look at me it's like I can see the machinery ticking, lol.
LOL! Exactly, my SLW act like I'm going to kill them

Whatever, little ungrateful birdies! They had better lay some awesome eggs yo!!

I agree that the speckleds are just super smart and I have yet to see one of them peck at anyone, my other breeds are all guilty of that. I LOVE how the speckleds "chat", I just want to squeeze them and carry them around in my purse

I have one, her name is Tiny (my kids named her that because she's the smallest) and she's got so much white on her, she stands out and she is fairly cautious unless I am sitting and then she comes over and just chats up a storm, walking around me and then will finally sit beside me. So sweet!

Hey everyone. So it's been years since I've been on BYC. I recently purchased a Speckled Sussex hen and I'm in love with her! I'd love to breed them but that's a long term goal bc I'd need a new pen to separate them and I'd have to find someone to buy them from. I'd like to avoid hatchery birds but right now I'm not familiar w/ the standard of perfection of them. I'd love to hear some opinions on my hen as far as her quality. She's in my avatar. She just began laying about 3 weeks ago.

Hi everyone. We got these 2 today. A light sussex @10wks old & a coronation sussex @14wks old.
