The Sussex thread!

I have two SS that I ordered from MPC. They are sweethearts, the first to come running when they hear the back door open and I've stepped on them more than any of the other girls as they mill about underfoot waiting to see what goodies I've brought them. We like to call them "the butterballs" because they are just so round and gluttonous. Just the other day, my 19 month old tried to pick one of them up (quite amusing since they are very nearly as big as he is, although they weigh much less). When he was unable to actually lift her, he decided to hug/snuggle her and I had to pull him off so that he wouldn't squash her. She took it all in stride, and fluffed as soon as I got him off her (I think she thought he was one strange rooster

) They don't lay quite as reliably as my SLW or my two EE, but I do get 5-6 eggs a week from each of them and they are usually medium sized so I can't really complain about it. One of them can be a bit bossy with the lower hens in the pecking order, but generally they are pretty gentle with the other birds. I keep hoping Merri will go broody on me since last weekend she was spending hours in the nest box and would fluff her hackles and give me the velociraptor growl every time I opened the boxes to check for eggs.

If you weren't planning on showing them . . . . you shouldn't worry!
They will be cute and friendly as they should be

There are very few sources of Show Quality speckled sussex out there. I have 3 hatchery ss - - - 2 from ideal and 1 from mt. healthy.
All are total darlins. I have no regrets.

We've been told we can't keep roosters on our property from the city, and I will be parting with my amazing coronation sussex flock, all purebred greenfire - NO SPLITS. An incredible HUGE roo, 5 hens - almost 7 mths, started laying 2 weeks ago....eggs developing in the bator as we speak

I'll be posting an auction later today.

I breed and sell SS so if you are ever interested in eggs let me know, I ship them all the time and have had excellent hatch rates. My SS are my favorite breed, so beautiful and friendly.

Good luck with your new babies.

I have a question about sex linked traits of the SS. First off do the pullets or roos of this breed feather first? Are there any other things I should be looking for to determine gender? I have 3 that are about 4 weeks old and one is significantly larger than other two and the big one has a pink-er comb, but it got feathers WAY before the other two.

Dogs is minor how about street lights on all night and police sirens and people yelling and honking horns all hours . I've always said the city is way to noisie for me .

I have a question if I could please ask . I bought speckled sussex eggs a couple years ago on BYC I cann't remember from who , but the problem is I was under the impression they were pure . I've since been asked questions I don't really know how to answer. -- First I must say I am in no way up set I love these little birds no matter what . I just don't want to miss represent them in their breed .

Besides the 2 brahmas in here these are what I hatched from those eggs . I have a beautiful light gray speckled in there that someone has told me is not sussex . Is this true ?? she has all the speckled sussex quality just not the dark coloring . Do these even look SS to any of you ?? I've hatched and sold alot of chicks as SS from these at local swaps , have I been incorrect and if I am are they a mutt or does someone recognise the breed ?? I'm sorry to be bothersome just really want to get this straightened out if I can . Thank You ~~ Tammy
