The Sussex thread!

Hello! I just got a Speckled Sussex yesterday. "Susie" is about 1 1/2 years old and is much happier in her new home. There was a mean welsummer who plucked EVERY tail feather out. She must be feeling fine because she gave me an egg today. Seriously. I was standing by my coop/run and she stood right next to me and laid the egg. She lets me handle her and comes whenever I come near. I hope that her tailfeathers will grow back quickly now that she's away from the meanie. :)

good for you for getting her into a better situation!

Introducing "Dangerous Beryl-Ann" one of my new girls! So far we've had a small egg everyday since she came to live with us! She's a good girl! But how big will her eggs get eventually? She is definitely in charge now! Even the cocks don't answer her back!

Looking for quality Light Sussex this Spring??

Found this on Craigslist this evening. What a stunning pullet! What beautiful type! Look at that long back and lovely tail placement! Stunning bottle-shaped body with superior breast development.
They have done lovely job melding the two lines and keeping size within SOP.

I ordered their New Hampshires this spring and they were kind enough to throw a couple surprises my way!

3 weeks later and I have this little guy! (obviously the little Light sussex is on the left. Ignore the stumpy faverolles chick)

1 week later, should be a stunner when it's older

My hatchery SS, Curly Jo (Her toes curl in slightly, she's at an age where fixing it is difficult at best. Her feet aren't bad and she walks just fine)

Or a Sussex cross?
Hi,
It is not a Sussex. The breed type is way wrong (unless this is a very imature bird). . It is a bird manifesting the Columbian gene (Co). and Silver gene (S).
It looks like it is built on the eWh locus and not the eb (Brown) locus. The way to tell it is the eWh locus is that eWh with Silver is white to the skin in the white parts. The eb locus has colored hues int he undercolor beneath the white parts.
See my avatar. This is a well bred 7 month old Light Sussex pullet.
Best,
Karen

Well I just finished my first hatch of barnyard mutts(including 2 NN) with 100% hatch so I went on EBay to buy leg bands....that was all. Then I just couldn't resist so 6+ speckled Sussex eggs are heading for my incubator next weekend. I honestly believe we need to set up a support group or something....chickens anonymous.lol
