The Sussex thread!

I
I posted her on the April hatch thread, but saw this thread and couldn't help but show off my Coronation Sussex, Marshmallow. She is a year old, a great layer, and super friendly. She is broody right now, so we got her 3 Light Sussex and 1 Buff Orp egg to hatch. I am pretty sure that 1 of the LS eggs is a quitter, but that leaves me 2. I love this breed so much I am really hoping for a LS Roo... hopefully the rest of the eggs make it to hatch (still 9 days to go)!
I've been looking at this forum for a while and am really impressed to see this bird I ha no idea they can look this beautiful why is its feathers around the neck not black what kind of white Sussex is this? A coronation Sussex? Wow very pretty if I look at her any longer I won't stop till I have some in my flock thanks for sharing extraordinary looking bird

Yes it is a Coronation Sussex... that is Lavender where a Light Sussex would have the black...

My welsummer had bright yellow feet even as an adolescent. She's about 9 or 10 months old now -started laying in March- still has bright yellow feet. I just got my first Speckled Sussex (supposed to be a pullet) which has pale pink/white feet.
QUESTION: my new 8 week old Sussex has feathers very low on her leg, almost to her feet - though not actually 'on' her toes as a Marans would: is this unusual? *I'll try and post photos later and poll you folks to see if I actually got a female. I'm reading here about how difficult this breed is to sex & am a little worried as I live in town and have a hens-only permit! (Would LOVE an excuse to move to "the country" tho' I think my extended family would think I'm bug-nuts if I told them I had to sell my house because of a bird! But I know You Folks understand, right?) ;-)
Yes, it is unusual and speaks of foreign blood in the bird. Sussex are a clean legged breed and never have feathers below the thighs.

I have had some light sussex that I purchased from good lines that had some feathers on their shanks. I culled them and have not had it since. I think there was some Brahma in the line way back and it sometimes pops up.

I wouldn't worry about it if it is just a pet chicken. The sussex are not difficult to sex, you just have to be patient. I can sex mine at 4 weeks or earlier. Now that isn't long to wait is it?

These are some pics I took of "Bambini" today. The comb appears really pink in these, but is actually pearly white with just a hint of pink in person. I hope you can see the 'yoga pants' on the legs (a few feathers between the knees and ankles, none on the toes), I wonder if the tail feathers got lost and migrated to the legs! I am told this bird is "about 2 months" old. Almost hate to ask, but I defer to the community's expertise here: pullet or cockerel?

My Roos just started crowing this morning. They will be 9 weeks old Sunday. It was very exciting hearing it for the first time.

does anybody know if this is a Sussex chick (the light brown one)? I someone got a bonus chick in with my Red Ranger Chicks (yellow), and I am not sure what breed it is.... Let me know your thoughts!

If it has a straight comb, it is either a Speckled Sussex or a Welsummer. If the legs are pinkish white, then Speckled Sussex. If they are yellowish, then it's a Welsummer. If it looks to have a pea comb, or just a flat space instead of the little spikes in the comb area, and gray or greenish legs, then it would most likely be an Easter Egger.

I don't think so. The speckled pattern starts off chipmunk striped but the coloring is different and they have a very obvious V on the head which yours lacks. I'd suggest posting on the "What Breed/Gender?" board. If you can narrow it down with other breeds offered where you ordered, that will help greatly.
