The Sussex thread!

I hatched out the most beautiful red Sussex pullets this spring. I used a Heritage RIR rooster over light sussex hens and of course they were sex link. The girls are now three months old and very pretty red Sussex and the boys look like light Sussex with a little bit more black
UK area folks probably have the answer to this one - was the red Sussex around before the RIR? The hybrid would not breed true but I am assuming a true red Sussex would?

har- be sure to come back and post how your girls lay and their personality. Wondering if the RIR amps up their weekly eggs as they say it should and if they are more personable. Was that the reason(s) why you crossed them?

I will post on how my sex-link/ red Sussex do. Yes I bred them for egg production and just seeing what I would get. So far there personality is great, calm, not a bit flighty just like there mom and dad. That would be a thought to get a red Sussex Roos and use him on them. Someone could probably answer that without me trying it. I really do not need another project. LOL

Well I have finally reached the end of the thread. I started reading when I hatched out 4 Speckled Sussex eggs from a fellow BYCer's eggs a week ago .. cute little ones they are too. I will wait the 4 weeks and see what I have, but I can already see a tail forming on 3 of them.. the third one has no tail, barely any wing feathers... so I can hope for 1 boy and 3 girls, right?
