Our chick Lucky, the only one who made it. She is 5 days old now :) She looks just like an SS chick except she is more red. She is a Speckled Sussex/ Red Sexlink.

She will have a few Silkie friends in a week :)

Hi again everyone. I posted a month ago about my five SS pullets. Since then we've lost one and sold two, so I only have two now. But yesterday the Husband said we should focus on them and get more! :D

Here's the last pic I have from before the sale last Friday. Still questioning their age...? They don't really seem to have grown or changed any in a month.

The one in the middle is Eloise, my favorite. On the right edge of the chair is Evangeline, who won a blue ribbon in our little parish fair. :D

HI,

Why did you sell them?  Just curious.   You going to get babies?

We have a really small operation and were maxed at 11 chickens. We picked the five friendliest/funniest and sold the rest to make room for new breeds. We love the sussex, but only two were approachable (and only one likes to be handled). We've talked about babies but don't have the setup right now. I'm gathering up supplies to make a brooder.

Here's my current flock. I'm hoping to find something splash, buff laced, or otherwise not black. :D

As you can see, I love talking about my chickens. ;)

After we got ours, my husband and I both have a hard time eating grocery store chicken. Chickens are so social, curious, smart, etc. that the thought of them confined to tiny cages and mushed together "cageless" is heartbreaking. We are considering meat chickens next year if we can bring our selves up to it. It's hard/stressful to integrate flocks.

We got our SS has 1 day olds. They are definately imprinted on us. Seems more so than the chix we got as young teens. Hard to know nature/nurture. The young teens are not SS. One looks like yours - probably an EE. Food treats make a huge difference for all of ours. My husband gives them alot more handouts than I do and they look for him, know is car, know when he comes home from work, etc. Pied Piper. You did not get your first flock as chicks, I take it?

I would love to have a broodie hen and have hen raised babies but no roo in the plans. Maybe get some fertilized eggs.

Enjoy!! Anut

No chicks here. Well, the farm lady up the road gave us a 2-day old RIR, and after six weeks of brooding in the tub we put her in a dog kennel outside with our friendliest pullet, to transition to the flock. But my wiring skills apparently aren't the best and something peeled back the chicken wire and pulled her through. :( So now I'm saving up for hardware cloth for a real brooder, especially since husband said no more inside chickens. :D

In my pic, starting on the left we have an australorp mix, black copper marans, the two ss, then another australorp mix. My first chickens were a barnyard blend from a feed store, $4 regardless of age, size, or anything. We bought one pullet and four peepers. We kept two from those, Twilight the Circus Chicken and Herkey the A-hole; they're reddening up in the face but still peeping. The BCM is General Tso, and the SS are Evangeline and Eloise. I do all the treats and feedings so when they hear or see me, they come running and flying. It's terrifying for my friends.
