Well, I just ordered a dozen Speckled Sussex eggs from Gabbard Farms. Can't wait till I get them!!

ETA: The book of Standards your talking about from the APA is it American Poultry Association “STANDARD ILLUSTRATIONS" or American Poultry Association – SHOWMANSHIP MANUAL or The New 2010 Standard of Perfection ?????

Just don't want to buy the wrong one!!

Does anybody know of a thread that explains the line of Greenfire Farms Coronations, I'm curious to see how many birds he brought in and how the breeding was done. I've seen birds with crooked toes and also some birds were bigger than others. Are we all just selling inbreed birds to one another or what? Has anyone else thought about this or am I just way off?

We imported three pairs of coros in the summer of 2007. We also imported two pairs of lights. Through careful breeding --especially if you cross with lights and then breed back to coros-- you should be able to avoid defects from inbreeding. But, I assume that avoiding inbreeding may not be a high priority of some breeders. The birds have now been moving across America for about three years (and a few other countries as well based on what I hear), so it's probably impossible to determine the inbreeding coefficient for any particular bird at this point.

If you're seeing signs of inbreeding, I recommend you either find a coro from a remote flock to add to your flock (and hope that it is fairly unrelated) or buy a light from a Greenfire bloodline (the lights were as large as the coros and also not very expensive) and blend it into your coro bloodline. The good news is that your problem is fairly easily solved.

Incidentally, we recently imported some red Sussex from a breeder in England who has birds that have won ribbons in national shows in that country. These should be an interesting addition to the Sussex gene pool in America.
